Ags Head Coach Gary Blair after winning Big 12

After his Texas A&M Aggies defeated the Texas Longhorns 67 to 60 Wednesday night at Reed Arena, Aggies head coach Gary Blair held an extended post-game press conference.

However, truth be told, this press conference was not much longer than Coach Blair's usual post-game sessions.

Listen to his opening comments: "...a hard working basketball team..."

Yesterday, the Rice Owls women's basketball team boarded a bus headed for Tulsa, OK, to prepare for the 2007 Conference USA Women's Basketball Tournament.

Owls' head coach Greg Williams: "...a huge loss..."

Rice Owls head coach Greg Williams has been very straightforward to me this season after every game -- wins and losses.

Thursday night was no different.

Rice was defeated by the UAB Blazers 79 to 66.

The final margin does not describe how thorough UAB's victory was Thursday night. UAB shot 48.4% (30 for 62) from the field for the game. Sixteen made baskets came from lay-ups.

With the loss, Rice's record is now 9-6 in Conference USA with just one more regular season game remaining -- Saturday, February 24, at 5pm, versus Memphis.

Riverin and Berezhynska after Rice Owls' loss to UAB

The Rice Owls squared off against the UAB Blazers Thursday night at Rice's Autry Court in a very important ball game as the Conference USA regular season winds down.

Rice entered the game with a 9-5 conference record while UAB was 10-4.

The Blazers are now 11-4.

UAB dominated the second half and defeated Rice 79 to 66.

The Blazers made 30 field goals in the game and 16 of those buckets came on lay-ups.

UAB carved up the Owls' defense throughout the ball game.

Listen to the post-game comments from two of Rice's key players (junior point guard Kadie Riverin and junior post Valeriya Berezhynska).

Rice closes out the regular season with a 5pm tip-off this Saturday, February 24, versus Memphis.

HRR talks w/ Hilton, Karleen, and Snow

Following today's Houston Comets' press conference which officially named Karleen Thompson the team's new head coach / general manager, I spoke with team owner Hilton Koch, Coach Thompson, and Comets center Michelle Snow.

Snow is in town rehabbing her left foot. She attended the press conference wearing a boot on the foot.

Before anyone wonders and spreads senseless rumors, Sheryl Swoopes and Tina Thompson didn't attend the press conference because they both had prior committments: NBA All - Star in Las Vegas.

Both players are very happy Karleen is the team's new head coach. Trust me.

Please listen to the interviews:

Hilton Koch: "...committed to the community..."

Karleen Thompson: "...win for the fans..."

Michelle Snow: "...great situation for us..."

During the press conference, Karleen mentioned she's working to complete her coaching staff which she hopes to finalize by next week.

Most of the local tv stations attended the press conference; so, video footage should be available later.

Sherri Coale and Gary Blair after Ags win over Sooners

Texas A&M (19-4, 9-2) defeated Oklahoma (18-4, 8-3) 78 to 68 at Reed Arena before 4,620 fans.

Today's win by the Aggies completed a regular season sweep over the Sooners.

A&M's starting backcourt (Takia Starks and A'Quonesia Franklin) evenly split 50 points.

Both players were outstanding in the ball game.

Starks scored 17 of her 25 points in the first half to help the Aggies to a 37 to 29 halftime lead while Franklin scored 20 of her 25 points in the second half to help the Ags to the 10-point victory.

Franklin added 10 assists and committed just one turnover in 38 minutes of action.

The Sooners turned the ball over 24 times in the game.

Guard play is definitely a concern for the Sooners and head coach Sherri Coale.

After trailing by eight at halftime, Oklahoma got the ball inside to Courtney Paris -- the best low post player in women's college hoops -- early and often in the second half.

Paris scored nine of OU's first 12 points in the second half to help OU tie the game at 39 with 17:47 left in the game.

The game went back-and-forth the next few minutes; however, the momentum swung to the Aggies with the scored tied at 50 with 13:23 left because Courtney picked up her fourth foul of the game.

She checked out of the game; and, the Aggies took advantage by going on a 11 to 4 run over the next five minutes and five seconds.

Franklin scored five points during the run for the Aggies.

Courtney returned to the game with 7:03 left in the game; but, Franklin hit a jump shot at the 6:36 mark to give the Aggies a 63 to 54 lead.

However, Courtney began to make an impact over the next few minutes as she scored eight points to help bring the Sooners within three points (67 to 64) with 2:29 left in the game.

Franklin responded with a jump shot; and, after a turnover, Starks drained two free throws to give the Aggies a seven point (71 to 64) lead with 91 seconds left in the game.

Courtney Paris finished the game with 25 points and 14 rebounds.

Post-game comments from Coach Coale and Aggies head coach Gary Blair.

Sherri Coale: "...A&M's guard play was outstanding..."..."

Gary Blair: "Every game is "the biggest game"

UTEP uses big scoring run to beat Lady Cougars

The Houston Lady Cougars picked the wrong time of a ball game to play poor basketball.

Houston (7-13, 4-6) led the Texas-El Paso Miners (17-4, 7-3) 54 to 45 with about seven and half minutes left in the ball game; however, the Lady Cougars were outscored 26 to 9 the rest of the game to lose to the Miners 69 to 61.

UTEP's Jareica Hughes, 5'3, freshman point guard, led the Miners with 20 points including nine points down the stretch.

Hughes did not play in UTEP's 84 to 31 blowout loss to the Rice Owls two days ago due to a sore left shoulder; so, her importance to UTEP's success became very clear today.

Hughes blew past Houston defenders whenever she wanted. Ironically, she went left practically every time; but, Houston failed to make the necessary defensive adjustments.

UH’s inability to hit shots, going 2-11 with five turnovers in the last eight minutes allowed UTEP to take the win.

For the game, the Cougars were 20-53 (.377) and 3-12 (.250) from behind the three-point line.

After not taking a free throw in the first half, UTEP was 16-22 from the stripe in the second half, including a 9-12 mark in the games final 70 seconds.

Houston finished 18-25 from the line.

After six-straight games inside the Houston beltway, the Cougars head on the road for a season-long four-game trip.

The trek begins next weekend with games Friday at UCF and Sunday at Southern Miss. Tipoffs are scheduled for 6 p.m. CST and 2 p.m., respectively.

Houston Cougars head coach Joe Curl after the game: "...especially disappointed in the last five, six minutes..."

Tulane Ends Lady Coogs' home win streak

Thursday night at Hofheinz Pavilion, the Tulane Green Wave showed the Houston Lady Cougars why Tulane is considered the top team in C-USA.

Tulane (18-4, 7-2) took advantage of turnovers and mental errors by Houston (7-12, 4-5) the last six minutes and 19 seconds of the first half to turn a tie game at 22 into a 71 to 56 rout.

Houston had won six straight games at Hofheinz Pavilion before Thursday's loss.

Tulane finished the first half outscoring Houston 15 to 4 to lead 37 to 26 at halftime.

Tulane's Nikki Luckhurst scored 10 of her game-high 20 points during the run to demoralize Houston.

Houston never recovered from Luckhurst's scoring outburst the rest of the ball game.

Houston's Tye Jackson struggled shooting the basketball the entire game.

Jackson shot 5 for 21 from the field and 10 for 15 from the foul line; however, she did add 10 rebounds and nine assists.

As a team, Houston shot an awful 28.3% (17 for 60) from the field for the game while Tulane made 27 of their 67 field goal attempts and 11 for 16 from the free throw line.

The Lady Cougars committed 22 turnover in the ball game.

After the game Houston head coach Joe Curl said, "...I'm just really disappointed..."
