Gary Blair: "We're still the hunter"

Despite being chosen as the preseason favorite to win the Big 12 by the league's coaches as well as being picked as a top 10 team in the three preseason college basketball polls,

>Gary Blair, Texas A&M women's head coach, believes his Aggies are "...still the hunter...".

The Aggies host the Chinese National Team in exhibition game on November 3.

TK Starks -- "a gym rat"

The few times I watched her play at Westfield High School, I had a good idea Takia Starks was a talented basketball player.

T.K. helped Westfield when the state championship her junior year.

This season, Starks will be a junior for the Texas A&M Aggies. She's not very vocal; but, T.K. doesn't need to be vocal. Her game speaks very loudly for her.

Last season Starks was named an All-Big 12 First Team selection. She was one of two Aggies to play and start in all 32 games last season. Starks averaged a team-leading 14.2 points per game which ranked eighth-best in the Big 12 Conference and she has made 32 career starts in league play.

I guess when you're "...a gym rat..." -- as Starks describes herself -- results like that should be expected.

KSU's Lehning has her own unique style

Big 12 Basketball Media Day (KANSAS CITY, MO) -- I'll admit it. Before last week's Big 12 Media Day, I couldn't have picked Shalee Lehning from a group of basketball players.

However, after speaking with the Kansas State star, I did learn a few things about Lehning.

Lehning, 5'9", junior guard for the Wildcats, is one of two Big 12 players to produce two triple-doubles (points, rebounds, and assists) in her career.

As she told me during the interview, Lehning has her "...own unique style..." on the basketball court.

CU's unknown great player

Big 12 Basketball Media Day (KANSAS CITY, MO) -- Most women's college basketball fans know about Oklahoma's Courtney Paris. However, not as many of those same fans know who was the second leading scorer and rebounder in the Big 12 last season.

Colorado's Jackie McFarland is the answer.

This season, McFarland (6'3") enters her senior season at Colorado University. She averaged 17.8 points and 10.8 rebounds per game last season. Those stellar numbers earned McFarland a spot on the Big 12's all conference First Team.

Though she's produced tremendous stats in her college career, McFarland has one goal she hopes to accomplish before graduating from CU in the Spring: she wants to help the Buffaloes reach the NCAA Tournament.

As McFarland described it, reaching the NCAA Tournament is the "...biggest thing I'm missing in my career right now."

Interview with Gail Goestenkors

Big 12 Basketball Media Day (KANSAS CITY, MO) -- The first person I interviewed at the 2007 Big 12 Women's Basketball Media Day was Gail Goestenkors, the new head coach of the Texas Longhorns.

Coach G discussed her expectations for the Longhorns in 2007 - 2008; her timetable to return the 'Horns to a national power; her role with USA Basketball; recruiting; the differences and similarities between the Big 12 and the ACC as well as a comparison between the University of Texas and Duke University.

Coach G was very candid in her comments.

Take a listen to the HRR's chat w/ Coach G.
