POSTED: February 6, 2023 -- 1:22 p.m. CT
For the third time this season, men's basketball guard Mekhi Mason was named the Conference USA Freshman of the Week, the Conference USA announced Monday afternoon.
He becomes the first Owl to win the award three times in a season since Marcus Evans in 2015-16.
Mason picks up his third Freshman of the Week award of the season after averaging 14.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game for the Owls (15-8, 6-6 C-USA). He shot 57 percent from the field (8 for 14), 67 percent from three (4 for 6) and 75 percent from the free-throw line (9 for 12) all while averaging 35.5 minutes per game.
Mason began the week scoring 12 points in a road loss to Louisiana Tech in which Rice battled back from a 24-point deficit to take a late lead. He also grabbed four rebounds and had a team-high four assists. Mason followed that by scoring a team-high 17 points while grabbing five rebounds against North Texas. He connected on 5 for 8 attempts from the field, including 2 for 3 from three-point range, and sank 5 of 6 from the charity stripe.
Rice will head to Florida for a pair of games beginning next Thursday, February 9, when Rice travels to Boca Raton to face league-leader, No. 19 Florida Atlantic. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT and will be streamed at ESPN+.
