Rice men's hoops adds grad transfer Carl Pierre
POSTED: April 3, 2021 -- 1:20 p.m. CT
Rice men's basketball coach Scott Pera announced Saturday afternoon the signing of graduate transfer Carl Pierre to a grant-in-aid for the 2021-22 school year.
“Carl Pierre has signed to join our team for his final season,” said Pera. “Carl is a grad transfer from UMass where he had a decorated career. He is a great shooter that will fit our style of play perfectly. He is also a tenacious defender that adds length and toughness at that end of the floor. But more importantly, he is a terrific young man that will fit our culture. He came here in our quest to win a conference championship.”
Pierre, a 6'4" guard, comes to Rice University after spending the last four years at UMass where he averaged 12.2 points per game and 2.7 rebounds per game while connecting on 38.4% from three-point distance. Pierre, from Boston, MA, scored 1,353 points, tied for 18th in UMass history. Pierre connected 286 threes, good for second in school history and his 38.4% three-point field goal percentage is the sixth highest in school history. He also holds the record for most three-pointers in a game, connecting on eight against Yale (12/11/19).
Last year in just 15 games, Pierre was second on the team in scoring, averaging 12.7 points while pulling down 3.8 rebounds. He also led the squad with 37 three-pointers. He scored double-figures 10 times, leading the Minutemen in scoring three times, including a season-high 23 points against Bryant (12/21). He ranked fifth in the Atlantic 10 in three-pointers made per game (2.5) and 19th in scoring.
Pierre joins freshmen Jaden Geron (Fresno, CA) and Damion McDowell (Inglewood, CA) and grad transfer Terrance McBride (Lynwood, CA/Cornell) in the 2021-22 signing class.
