Rice Basketball Adds Graduate Transfer Tommy McCarthy

Thursday afternoon, Rice men's basketball coach Scott Pera announced the signing of Tommy McCarthy to a grant-in-aid for the 2019-20 school year. McCarthy will join the Owls as a graduate transfer.
"Today I am pleased to announce the addition of Tommy McCarthy to our program as a graduate transfer," said Pera. "Tommy has recently graduated from Harvard University and will be pursuing his M.B.A while using his last year of basketball eligibility. He brings a tremendous work ethic, valuable experience and will add value to our program in a variety of ways. Please join me in welcoming him to the Rice family."
McCarthy, a 6'0" guard, comes to Rice after graduating from Harvard, where he averaged 4.8 points and 2.1 assists in three years.
As a freshman in 2015-16, the Rancho Santa Fe, California, native played in 28 games, making 25 starts. He averaged 8.8 points and while leading the team with 3.6 assists. He connected on 35.7% from three, while placing third on the team with 41 three-pointers. McCarthy also led the Crimson in free throw percentage, connecting on 83.3%.

McCarthy missed the entire 2017-18 season due to injury and was held to just eight games last year.
McCarthy joins Zach Crisler (North Wales, PA), Max Fiedler (Indialantic, FL) and Quincy Olivari (Atlanta, GA) in the 2019-20 signing class.
