Rice sophomore Trey Murphy III Named C-USA Player of the Week for Week 2 of the 2019-20 Season

Rice sophomore guard Trey Murphy III was named the Conference USA Player of the Week, announced Monday afternoon by the conference office.
It's Murphy's first career Player of the Week honor.
Murphy III averaged 21.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals in leading Rice to a pair of road victories this week. He began the week by scoring a career-high 25 points, including 20 in the second half, while recording six rebounds and a career-high three steals in an 80-74 victory at Northwestern State. He connected on 7-of-13 from the field, 5-of-10 from three and 6-of-7 from the free throw line. In the final two minutes, Murphy hit a three-pointer and then made three-of-four free throws to help seal the win.

He followed that by leading Rice to the second biggest comeback in school history, scoring a team-high 18 points and pulling down four rebounds as Rice came back from a 22-point second half deficit to defeat UC Santa Barbara, 82-81. The Durham, N.C., native was 6-of-11 from the floor, 5-of-8 from three and 1-of-2 from the charity stripe.
On the week, Murphy was 13-of-24 (54.2%) from the floor, 10-of-18 (55.6%) from three and 7-of-9 (77.8%) from the free throw line. The two wins have given Rice its first four-game winning streak since 2016-17.
