Houston Cougars announce signing of Caleb Mills to a National Letter of Intent
November 17, 2018 -- 10:50 a.m. CST
The Houston Cougars men's basketball program announced guard Caleb Mills has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend the University of Houston and play basketball for Men's Head Coach Kelvin Sampson and the Coogs.
Houston Head Coach Kelvin Sampson has high remarks for Mills' skillset.
"You know, I don't like making bold statements," Sampson stated. "That stuff is really cookie jar stuff. But, I can safely say Caleb is the best offensive player I've recruited since I've been here of kids coming into the program."
High praise indeed.
Sampson continued his evaluation of Caleb's game: "He can really score in a myriad of ways. Played point guard on his AAU team. First time I saw him play, I think he had 37; and, I think he attempted 14 shots. Just ridiculously efficient. Really good in space. You can iso him. You can put him ball screens. He's an excellent three-point shooter."
With Mills signed, Sampson says the Coogs are moving closer to have three-point shooters at four of the five positions.
"We lose Corey (Corey Davis Jr. to graduation); but, here comes Caleb. Here comes Marcus (Marcus Sasser). Here comes Justin Gorham. With Marcus coming in; Caleb coming in; and Justin coming in; Armoni (Armoni Brooks) coming back: shooter; shooter; shooter; shooter."
Sampson concluded he believes Caleb Mills is a player who will have the ball in his hands at the end of games and make plays for the Coogs.
"I get asked this question a lot: with Dot (Damyean Dotson) we had somebody who could finish games; with Rob (Rob Gray) we had somebody who could finish games. We got guys this year that can finish games. The games we play this year will tell us who that is; and, it could be game to game; but, I know that Caleb is one of those kids that you look at him and say 'You want the ball in his hands end of shot clock and at the end of games.' I think he's going to be that good."
Caleb announced his verbal commitment to Coach Sampson and the Coogs August 5, 2018.
