Rockets Announce Roster Updates
Posted: July 10, 2025 -- 11:34 a.m. CT
Thursday morning, the Houston Rockets announced they have signed forward Jabari Smith Jr. to a contract extension (5 years, $122 million) and have re-signed forward Jeff Green (1 year, $2.29 million), guard Aaron Holiday (1 year, $2.29 million), forward Jae'Sean Tate (1 year, $2/29) and guard Fred VanVleet (2 years, $50 million).
Green signed as a free agent with Houston on August 7, 2023 and also played for the Rockets during 2019-20. Last season, he appeared in 32 games with three starts while averaging 15.6 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists per 36 minutes played. Green also shot 50.4% from the floor, marking his second time shooting 50.0% or better over his 17 seasons.
In 2024-25, Green was one of eight players 38 or older who appeared in a game. He made his NBA debut as a 21-year-old for Seattle in 2007 alongside fellow rookie Kevin Durant. Green has the fourth-most games played (1,217) among active players, only trailing LeBron James (1,562) and former Rockets Chris Paul (1,354) and Russell Westbrook (1,237).
Holiday signed as a free agent with Houston on July 10, 2023. In two seasons with the Rockets, he has appeared in 140 games with four starts while averaging 14.9 points, 3.9 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 1.1 steals per 36 minutes played. Holiday also shot 39.2% from 3-point range and 88.5% from the foul line over that span.
According to NBA.com, Holiday had a defensive field goal percentage of .419 last season. He also had 83 assists with just 37 turnovers in 62 games played. Next season will mark Holiday's eighth in the NBA. His brother Jrue is approaching his 17th season, while his other brother Justin has played in 11.
Smith was the third overall pick by Houston in the 2022 NBA Draft. In 57 games with 39 starts last season, he averaged 12.2 points and 7.0 rebounds in 30.1 minutes per game. The Rockets were 16-2 when he scored at least 15 points and 12-13 in games he missed. Smith ranked third in the NBA in defensive rating (106.1) among players who averaged at least 30.0 minutes played.
No other player in NBA history reached Smith's totals of points, rebounds, blocks and 3-pointers made through the first 212 games played of a career. He is one of five players in league history to have averaged at least 13.0 ppg, 7.0 rpg and 1.5 3FGM through the first three seasons of a career (Paolo Banchero, Luka Doncic, Lauri Markkanen, Kristaps Porzingis).
Tate signed as a rookie free agent with Houston on Nov. 25, 2020. In 52 games with two starts last season, he averaged 11.5 points, 7.2 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.6 steals per 36 minutes played. Tate also had a team-best defensive field goal percentage of .392.
Not counting Moses Malone who entered the NBA through the ABA dispersal draft, Tate has the third-most games played (296) by an undrafted player in franchise history, trailing Matt Bullard (538) and Chuck Hayes (426).
VanVleet signed as a free agent with Houston on July 7, 2023. In his first two seasons with the Rockets, VanVleet started all 133 of his games played while averaging 15.9 points, 6.9 assists, 3.8 rebounds and 1.47 steals in 35.2 minutes per game. He has averaged a league-high 36.5 mpg dating back to 2019-20.
Over the past two seasons, VanVleet had an assist-to-turnover ratio of 4.33 and Houston ranked 10th in fewest turnovers committed after having the most turnovers of any team from 2020-01 through 2022-23. In 2024-25, VanVleet became the fourth player in NBA history to have recorded at least 300 assists and 90 steals with fewer than 90 turnovers in a season.
Dating back to 2019-20, VanVleet is one of four players to have averaged at least 18.0 ppg, 6.0 apg, 4.0 rpg and 1.50 spg (LaMelo Ball, De'Aaron Fox, Dejounte Murray). VanVleet was also one of 10 players with 350-plus games played over that span to have averaged at least 3.0 3-pointers made.
