HOUSTON, TX (Fertitta Center) -- The Houston Cougars defeated the Our Lady of the Lake Saints 112-46 Saturday afternoon. Houston Head Coach Kelvin Sampson added the game against OLLU, an NAIA member, to the schedule a few days ago as an opportunity to give its bench players (the White Team) plenty of game action, some experience, confidence, and reward them for their hard work and effort in practice this season.
Houston's starting 5 (the Red Team) rested today. They cheered on their teammates; and, their teammates gave them plenty of reasons to cheer.
Cameron Tyson scored a game-high 32 points. Cam made a school-record 10 three-pointers (18 attempts) in the ball game.
"I feel like every time I shoot the ball it's going in," Cam Tyson said after the game. "I mean that's just the type of person I am. I didn't feel like I was in no special zone or anything. I feel like I was taking good shots and they was going in today."
Freshman Tramon Mark finished the game with 22 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists. Mark scored 14 of Houston's first 21 points in the game.
Freshman Jamal Shead filled the stat sheet with 20 points, 11 assists, 9 rebounds, and 8 steals.
Freshman Kiyron Powell added 13 rebounds and 11 assists.
Redshirt-freshman J'Wan Roberts produced 11 boards and 10 points.
Ryan Elvin, freshman walk-on, scored 9 points (3 for 8 threes).
After the game Houston Head Coach Kelvin Sampson said, "What's important to me is Cam, Jamal, J'Wan, Kiyron, Tramon, Reggie, Ryan, and Voodoo (big man Caleb Broodo). Those guys are together every day. Banging their heads against the Red Team; and, for them to get the opportunity to go out there; and, then, I was proud of our White Team on the bench supporting those guys. Just like they support each other. At the end of the day, we're one team. To steal from Barack Obama: "We're not the Red Team or the White Team, we're the Cougar Team."
Jamal Shead said he's gained confidence as the season has progressed.
"I play against, practice against, the number one defense in the country every day," Shead commented.
