NOTE: The Coogs announced the complete nonconference schedule Tuesday afternoon, August 24. The paragraphs below were written before as info about the nonconference games were leaked.

Friday afternoon, the Houston Cougars Men's Basketball program announced a home-and-home series with the Virginia Cavaliers. The first game of the two-game series will take place this year, November 16, when Houston hosts Virginia. Houston will head to Virginia on December 22 during the 2022-23 season.

According to CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein, Houston will host Louisiana Lafayette as part of the 2021-22 nonconference slate.

Earlier this week, Montana Tech (NAIA) announced a match-up with Houston will take place November 6 when the Diggers visit Fertitta Center.

Houston Head Coach Kelvin Sampson mentioned to Fox Sports' Mark Berman the Coogs will play at Alabama this season as well as face Oklahoma State at a neutral site location. Last season's Houston - Alabama match-up was scheduled for December 19; however, it was canceled due to COVID-19 health and safety protocols.

Houston will announce its complete 2021-22 schedule at a later date; however, with those 2 games announced plus Houston's participation in the 2021 Maui Invitational, the Coogs' schedule for this season is beginning to take shape.

The Houston Chronicle's Joseph Duarte reports the Houston - Oklahoma State game will take place at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, TX.

Rice Owls men's basketball head coach Scott Pera told me Houston and Rice will face each other this season.

Rocco Miller tweeted 4 matchups for the Coogs: vs Hofstra, November 9; vs Northwestern State, November 30; vs Alcorn State, December 6; and at Texas State, December 22.

Rothstein tweeted the Coogs will host the Bryant Bulldogs (from the Northeast Conference). Date and time to be announced later.

The American Athletic Conference will return to an 18-game conference schedule for men's basketball. Last season, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the AAC had a 20-game conference schedule.

The 2022 American Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Championship will take place March 10-13 at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.
