POSTED: August 6, 2019 -- 7:33 p.m. CT

Tuesday afternoon, the Houston Cougars Men's Basketball program received a verbal commitment from 6'10 Kiyron Powell. Powell is from Evansville, IN. Kiyron (Key-ron) announced his decision inside Bosse High School's Fine Arts Gallery:

"I felt like there was no reason to wait any longer," said Powell. "There was nothing else they could show me or that they had to show me. I figured it was time. I never thought we would be in this position. To take this sport this far, it means a lot."

November is the earliest Powell can sign with the University of Houston to continue his academic and athletic career.

The Early Period for Division I basketball to sign National Letters of Intent (NLI) to attend Division I schools is November 13 to November 20. The Regular Period for Division I basketball to sign an NLI is April 15, 2020 to May 20, 2020.

Listed at 200 / 205 pounds, Powell needs to get stronger. However, Powell is an elite shot blocker. He averaged 7.3 blocks per game last season to help guide Bosse to the state championship game. He's also athletic and has the quickness to defend multiple positions.

He has an ever-improving game on offense. He's got a solid face up jumper from 15 feet; and, during grassroots ball for Spiece Indy Heat program on the Nike EYBL circuit, Powell showed three-point range.

Powell is an epileptic. He was diagnosed with epilepsy when he was 13. He needs to make sure he takes his medication as well as have regular check-ups and blood work to make sure his health is okay.

Powell's verbal commitment to UH is Houston's third pick up for the Class of 2020. Powell joins guards Jamal Shead and Tramon Mark in the Coogs' 2020 class. Shead, 6'1", announced his commitment to UH on May 27 while Mark, 6'5", verballed to the Coogs on April 18.

The Early Period for Division I basketball to sign National Letters of Intent (NLI) to attend Division I schools is November 13 to November 20. The Regular Period for Division I basketball to sign an NLI is April 15, 2020 to May 20, 2020.
