Carr to Chicago

"Carr Heads to Bulls for Shammond"

The Chicago Bulls traded the draft rights to G Shammond Williams (34th overall) to the Atlanta Hawks for the draft rights to G Cory Carr (49th overall) and a 1999 and 2000 second round draft pick.

Notes:

  • As second round picks, both players can receive non guaranteed contracts worth under $300 K.

Who got the better of the deal?

Chicago.

Why?

The Bulls obtained 2 draft picks for someone (Shammond) who may not make this year’s roster. Second round picks aren’t very valuable; but, they can be used in future trades.

Carr, 6’4, has more size than Williams. He’s a good shooter; but, it’s unlikely he’ll make the Bulls’ roster, also.

Obtaining Williams repeats what the Hawks already have: undersized scoring guards. Starting point guard Mookie Blaylock, and back ups Eldridge Recasner and Ed Gray are all under 6’3. Williams is 6’1, maybe. Shammond is a great shooter with unproven point guard skills. He provides insurance if Recasner decides to sign with another team.
