"Toronto gets Carter and Cash"

The Toronto Raptors acquired the draft rights to G Vince Carter (5th overall) and cash from Golden State in exchange for the draft rights to F Antawn Jamison (4th overall).

1998 - ‘99 Salaries:

Vince Carter, Tor.: $2.109 M

Antawn Jamison, GS: $2.329 M

Who got the better of the deal?

Toronto.

Why?

Vince Carter will allow the Raptors to trade G Doug Christie. Christie has requested a trade. Now, the Raptors can oblige him. Carter has the size and athleticism to be a very good big guard. His perimeter shot improved from year to year. He has the strength to post up and excels in the open floor.

Antawn may have a good career; however, the Warriors have no one in back court. They are going to trade Latrell Sprewell. Jim Jackson is a free agent. The Warriors can buy out Muggsy Bogues’ contract. They want to trade Bimbo Coles. The only guard left is Tony Delk which doesn’t solve anything.

Antawn provides insurance if the Warriors cannot re-sign F Jason Caffey. The Warriors don’t have plans to re-sign F Clarence Weatherspoon. C Erick Dampier and F Donyell Marshall played well last season and both are very good rebounders. Antawn isn’t big enough to play power forward and neither is Marshall.

The Warriors would have been better off keeping Vince Carter.
