Antonio Daniels Dealt to Spurs

June 24, 1998

"Grizzlies send Disappointing Daniels to San Antonio"

The Vancouver Grizzlies traded G Antonio Daniels to the San Antonio Spurs for F Carl Herrera and the draft rights to G Felipe Lopez (24th overall).

1998 - ‘99 Salaries:

Antonio Daniels, SA: $2.472 M

Carl Herrera, Van.: $2.080 M

Felipe Lopez, Van.: $0.723 M

Note:

  • Herrera can be a free agent next summer.

Who got the better of the deal?

Vancouver.

Why?

With the Grizzlies drafting G Mike Bibby with the second pick overall in the Draft, they didn’t need Antonio. Antonio had a very disappointing season last year. He never performed up to the expectations of being the 4th player selected in last year’s Draft.

Antonio should back up Avery Johnson at point guard. Antonio does have problems with knee tendinitis which may be cause for concern. He is more of a combination guard rather than a playmaker. He’s 6’4 which gives the Spurs size in the back court; however, he doesn’t solve the Spurs need for perimeter shooting.

Carl Herrera gives the Grizzlies another rebounder in the front court. If he can stay healthy, Carl can score around the basket and shoot from about 15 feet. Also, since he can be a free agent next summer, the Grizzlies gained some salary flexibility.

Felipe never lived up to ridiculously high expectations placed on him coming out of high school. He isn’t a great outside shooter; however, he has shown improvement. He excels in the transition game and is very good playing the passing lanes. His work ethic and willingness to improve should bode well for Vancouver.
