Jason Caffey: "From Penthouse to Outhouse"

February 19, 1998: "Bulls Send Caffey to Bay Area"

The Chicago Bulls acquired F David Vaughn from the Golden State Warriors in exchange for F Jason Caffey and 2 second round draft picks (1998 and 2000).

1997 - ‘98 Salaries:

David Vaughn, Chicago: $326 K.

Jason Caffey, G. State: $851 K.

Note:

  • Both are free agents this summer.

Who got the better of the deal?

Neither club.

Why?

Surprisingly, the Bulls traded one of their best rebounders behind the enigmatic Dennis Rodman.  Caffey has to hate the deal.  He’s going from the penthouse to the outhouse.  If he gets consistent playing time, Jason can give the Warriors good rebounding. However, the Warriors may just rent him until the summer.  Caffey’s salary could give them more cap room.

Vaughn has been injured most of the season and it may be difficult for him to adjust to the Bulls’ “Triangle Offense”.  The Bulls might like the deal for the high second round pick they acquired.
