Chris Anstey Dealt to Bulls

September 29, 1999

“Mavs Deal Anstey to Bulls”

The Dallas Mavericks traded C Chris Anstey to the Chicago Bulls in exchange for a 2000 second round draft pick.

Note:

  • Anstey will be a free agent next summer.

1999 - ‘00 Player Salary:

Chris Anstey, Chi.: $1.114 M.

Who got the better of the deal?

Chicago.

Why?

The Bulls acquired something for nothing. Anstey had lost favor with the Nelsons (Don and Donn). Anstey was under the dog house for speaking out about his role on the club and questioning whether the Nelsons knew what they were doing.

Anstey, 7’0, is quick and somewhat athletic. He has not completely adjusted his Australia honed game to the NBA’s style of play. He’s a decent perimeter shooter. He’s not very strong and has a tendency to get into foul trouble quite a bit which could be a big problem in the more rugged Eastern Conference..

“We'll take a look, see where he is in his career,” Bulls’ GM Jerry Krause said. “He's a player we liked in the draft a couple of years ago, a young man who can run and shoot the basketball. We felt it was a good risk.”

If he makes the Bulls’ final roster, he’ll back up Will Perdue at center as well as see some minutes at power forward behind rookie forward Elton Brand.
