A. C. Green Returns to Lakers

“A.C. Returns to the Lakers”

The Dallas Mavericks signed then traded F A. C. Green to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for F / C Sean Rooks and a 2000 second round draft pick.

Note:

  • Green signed a 3 year contract; but only the first year is guaranteed.

1999 - ‘00 Salaries:

A. C. Green, LAL: $1.7 M.

Sean Rooks, Dal.: $1.9 M.

Who got the better of the deal?

Neither club.

Why?

Both the Mavs and Lakers obtained a player who fits a team need for a player who no longer fit.

Rooks, 6’10, 30 years of age will back up center Shawn Bradley. Rooks is a big body who can bang and be an effective rebounder and low post scorer.

“We feel very fortunate to have acquired Sean Rooks,” said Don Nelson, the Mavericks' coach and general manager. “Sean will be a replacement for Samaki Walker and A.C. Green, whom we lost through free agency, and he will beef up our front line.”

Green, 6’9, and 36 years of age will provide some intangibles such as leadership, toughness, defense and a winning attitude which the young and ego driven Lakers truly need.

“He's a solid rebounder and defender and does a lot of little things that don't show up in the box score but help you win games,” Lakers Executive VP Jerry West said of Green in a written statement.

A.C. should start and share the power forward position with Robert Horry while Travis Knight will back up Shaq.
