Orlando Continues Wheeling and Dealing

August 13,

“Sixers Acquire Billy Owens from Magic ”

The Orlando Magic traded F Billy Owens to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for F Harvey Grant and G Anthony Parker.

Note:

  • Grant and Parker can become free agents next summer.

1999 - ‘00 Salaries:

Billy Owens, Phi.: $2.09 M.

Harvey Grant, Orl.: $1.2 M.

Anthony Parker, Orl.: $0.980 M.

Who got the better of the deal?

Orlando.

Why?

“Billy's versatility on the court will allow us to utilize our personnel more to our advantage,” said Sixers GM Billy King in a statement. “For his size, Billy is a great ball handler, rebounder and has great knowledge of the game.”

Every team (Sacramento, Golden State, and Seattle) has lauded Owens’ 6’9, for his versatility and skills. However, Billy has never lived up to the expectations.

Owens was acquired by Orlando in the draft day deal sending Horace Grant to Seattle and Dale Ellis, Don MacLean, and rookie Corey Maggette to the Magic.

Billy was out of shape and injured last season for the Sonics. If Sixers head coach Larry Brown can get Owens to play near his potential, then the Sixers made a great deal. However given Owens’ lack of drive and self - motivation, that seems unlikely. He should back up George Lynch at small forward and also run the offense with the “Flight Brothers” (Allen Iverson and Larry Hughes) playing in the backcourt.

The Magic acquired more salary cap flexibility for next summer.

Parker, 6’6, was considered a great shooter coming out of Bradley University; but, he’s had foot problems his first two seasons in the league.

Grant, 6’9, is a finesse player. He’s very versatile and has played and guarded every position except point guard in his career.
