POSTED: June 17, 2019 -- 3:40 p.m. CT

Monday afternoon, Rice men's basketball coach Scott Pera has announced the signing of 6'10" Malik Ondigo to a national letter of intent for the 2019-20 school year. Ondigo, who played his last two seasons at Texas Tech, will sit out the 2019-20 season due to NCAA transfer rules and will have two years of eligibility remaining.

"Today we welcome Malik Ondigo to the Rice Basketball Family," said Pera. "Malik embodies everything we want in our program. He is a high character young man that is a very hard worker and a terrific teammate. He brings a unique skill set for someone his size that when he is eligible to play next year will be a huge asset to our on court performance. In the meantime, he will spend this year working on the court, weight room and classroom to add value to our program and University on a daily basis. We are all excited to get Malik on campus and get to work."

McCarthy, a 6'0" guard, comes to Rice after graduating from Harvard, where he averaged 4.8 points and 2.1 assists in three years.

As a sophomore at Texas Tech, Ondigo saw action in 18 games as the Red Raiders advanced to the NCAA Championship game. He scored 23 points on the season and grabbed rebounds. He had his best game against Mississippi Valley State, recording career-highs of eight points and five rebounds.
