Fresh off becoming the first team in Conference USA history to go undefeated in league play and then win a C-USA Tournament title, the No. 21 ranked Rice Owls women's basketball team was picked as a No. 12 seed in the 2019 NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament and will take on fifth-seeded Marquette in College Station on Friday. The game will be aired nationally on ESPN2 at 1 p.m. (CT)
The Owls will be making their third trip to the NCAA Tournament and first since the 2005 season. Rice will enter postseason play following the most successful regular season in program history, owning a 28-3 overall record. The Owls have already established a school record for wins, and currently have the nation's second-longest active win streak (21).
Marquette (26-7) received an at-large berth, its third-straight ticket to the NCAA Tournament and will make the program's 12th appearance in school history. The No. 5 seed matches the highest the team has ever received, last being earned in 2017. The Golden Eagles are 0-1 as a five seed and 5-11 all-time in the NCAA Championship. Marquette won its first-round matchup over No. 9 Dayton in 2018 as a No. 8 seed and was upended by top-seeded Louisville in the second round. It marked the first NCAA victory for the school.

Marquette seized the BIG EAST Regular-Season Championship for the second year in a row and is coming off of a loss to DePaul in the league tournament title game. The Golden Eagles advanced to the final for the third-straight season.
This will mark the third meeting between the two schools in program history. Rice and Marquette last met in 2006, when the Golden Eagles defeated the Owls 78-62 on December 3.
The Rice-Marquette winner will face the winner of the game between host Texas A&M (24-7) and Wright St. (27-6) on March 24 in College Station.
