Prairie View's Artavia Ford named SWAC Player of the Week

Prairie View A&M University forward / center Artavia Ford has been named the Southwestern Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week after posting strong performances against Mississippi Valley State and Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Ford averaged 15.0 points and 4.0 blocks per game in the Lady Panthers’ wins over the Devilettes and Lady Lions. In only 13 minutes of action against Mississippi Valley State, Ford scored 17 points and swatted five shots during a 91-55 Lady Panthers win.

The senior contributed 13 points and three blocked shots in just 12 minutes of play during PVAMU’s 79-46 win over UAPB. The Fort Worth, Texas native is second in the league in blocked shots per game (1.7) and is Prairie View A&M’s second-leading scorer at 11.1 points per game.

Other Notable Performances:

• Jackson State's Marneisha Hamer recorded 24 points and 14 rebounds in the team’s 89-60 win over Grambling State. It marked the second double-double in three games for the junior, who is currently the second-leading scorer in the SWAC at 16.1 points per game.
• Alabama State's Ayana Emmanuel averaged 18.5 points per game for the Lady Hornets, including a 25-point outing in a 70-58 victory over Alcorn State. The freshman shot 58.8 percent from the field and converted 16-of-19 from the free-throw line (84.2 percent).
• Alabama A&M's Nigeria Jones averaged 18.0 points, 2.5 steals, 2.0 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game over the past weekend. Jones nearly accounted for half of Alabama A&M's point total versus Alcorn State, scoring a season-best 24 points during the Lady Bulldogs' 51-50 win over the Lady Braves.
• Texas Southern's Niya Mitchell averaged 11.5 points, 13.5 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game in Texas Southern’s matchups versus Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Mississippi Valley State. Mitchell contributed 14 points, 18 rebounds, six steals and a pair of blocked shots in TSU's 62-49 win over UAPB.
