Texas Southern's Niya Mitchell named SWAC Player of the Week

Texas Southern University junior forward Niya Mitchell has been named the Southwestern Athletic Conference's Women’s Basketball Player of the Week after impressive efforts over this past weekend of play. The league announced the honor Tuesday afternoon.

Mitchell averaged 16.5 points, 13.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game in pacing the Lady Tigers to victories over Mississippi Valley State and Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Against UAPB, the 5-10 junior accounted for 14 points, 12 rebounds and three steals in the Lady Tigers' 59-58 overtime win. The Bay City, Texas native scored 19 points with 14 rebounds against the Devilettes, aiding Texas Southern to a 68-50 win.

Mitchell has posted five double-doubles in her past seven outings, ranking fifth in the league in scoring (13.5 PPG) and leading the SWAC with 9.3 rebounds per game.

Other Notable Performances:

• Prairie View A&M's Shala Dobbins scored a season high 30 points in a 75-65 win against Miss. Valley. She led PVAMU in a weekend sweep series with 19 points in an 80-41 win over UAPB. Dobbins averaged 24.5 points per game, going 22-of-24 from the free throw line, including a perfect 14-of-14 against the Devilettes. She also posted a weekend high of 11 rebounds, averaging 5.5 rebounds per game.
• Alabama State's Shmya Ward recorded 10 points and 10 rebounds along with one steal, two assists and three blocks in the win against Alcorn, then scored a career-high 19 points and hauled in eight rebounds against Southern. She also went 7-for-8 from the field and shot a perfect 5-for-5 from the charity stripe. She added to that performance with one assist, one steal and two blocks.
• Jackson State's Christina Ellis scored a career-high 26 points in a 77-74 win over Grambling along with six assists, five rebounds and five steals.
• Grambling State's Shakyla Hill scored 18 points along with 10 assists, seven steals, six assists and a block during a 77-74 loss to Jackson State.
