Arizona's Caleb Love (player) and Baylor's Robert Wright III (newcomer) were voted for Big 12 men's basketball weekly awards as both posted a pair of 20-point scoring nights.
Love scored 24.5 points per game, leading to a pair of wins that vaulted the Wildcats to a tie atop the Big 12 standings. Against Iowa State, the senior guard dropped 22 points, including a 3-pointer from beyond the midcourt line to beat the regulation buzzer and send the game into overtime, where Arizona would prevail 86-75. The St. Louis native scored 27 points at Arizona State, the most for a Wildcat at Arizona State since 1997, adding six rebounds and seven assists in the 81-72 victory. He is the first Arizona men's basketball player to win a Big 12 weekly award.
Wright averaged 23.0 points and 6.0 assists for the Bears, including averages of 17.0 points and 4.0 assists in the second half of both Baylor games. In the game against BYU, the freshman from Wilmington, Delaware, scored every one of the Bears' points in the final 5:14, outscoring the Cougars 14-10 to send the game into overtime. Against Kansas, the guard scored 20 of his 24 points in the second half, as BU tied a Big 12 record by erasing a 19-point halftime deficit to win 81-70. It is his first Big 12 weekly honor, and he is the second consecutive Baylor freshman to be the league's top newcomer, joining VJ Edgecombe's selection last week.
