Baylor's Norchad Omier (player) and Texas Tech's JT Toppin (newcomer) were honored with Big 12 men's basketball weekly awards after strong performances in neutral-site tournaments. It is the first career Big 12 weekly award for both.
Omier had a pair of 20-point, 10-rebound games at the Baha Mar Championship, earning a spot on the all-tournament team. The first Nicaraguan to earn a Division I basketball scholarship, Omier was instrumental in the Bears' 99-98 double-overtime win over St. John's (NY), collecting the rebound and the assist on Jeremy Roach's buzzer-beating game-winner. In the game, the fifth-year forward had 24 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and three steals. Against No. 11 Tennessee, he added 22 points and 10 rebounds, while scoring 13 of Baylor's first 16 second-half points, collecting his 72nd career double-double, which leads active Division I players.
Toppin averaged 17.0 points and 11.7 rebounds in three games. The sophomore from Dallas scored 22 points with a career-high 18 rebounds in the Red Raiders' opening game of the Legends Classic in Brooklyn against St. Joseph's. The New Mexico transfer had 15 points and six rebounds in a win over Syracuse to close the Legends Classic. Toppin added a 14-point, 11-rebound double-double to open the week against UAPB.
