Dan Gavitt: "But, it is not uncommon to have more than one bracket based on outcomes of games on Sunday afternoon."

2021 AAC Championship

POSTED: March 14, 2021 -- 11:40 a.m. CT

Sunday afternoon (2:15 p.m. Central Time), the 2-seed Houston Cougars will face the 5-seed Cincinnati Bearcats in the championship game of the 2021 American Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Championship.

The winner of the game will be the AAC champion and earn the automatic bid to the 2021 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. The announcement of the 68 teams who will (hopefully) participate in the Tourney will begin at approximately 5 p.m. CT on CBS.

During a recent conference call, Mitch Barnhart, Chair of the NCAA DI Men's Basketball Committee, and Dan Gavitt, NCAA Sr VP for Basketball, were asked if the conference championships that take place on Sunday have an impact on the seeding or placement of teams in the bracket and if the Selection Committee has multiple scenarios to take into account the games that happen on Sunday afternoon.

"Clearly, we're watching games and the results right up until the time that we reveal the bracket," Barnhart answered. "So, yes, we're paying attention. We will have multiple scenarios based on the weekend's results leading into Sunday.

"We will continue to monitor those at a very close level and the results of that will be a bracket that I think will be reflective of all the games up until that moment."

Next, since the conclusion of the AAC championship game would be very close to 5 p.m. and the Selection Show, Barnhart and Gavitt were asked if the Committee has contingencies 'if team A wins, go to this bracket'; 'if team B wins, go to this bracket'?

"That's a really good question," Gavitt replied. "In the past there have been times when the committee has had contingency brackets based on the outcome of one or more games on Sunday. There are other times when the committee has made an assessment that regardless of the outcome of games, seeding and bracketing wouldn't change.

"It's hard to predict that. It's really dependent on who is playing in the game, what the results might lead to. But, it is not uncommon to have more than one bracket based on outcomes of games on Sunday afternoon."
