The Houston Cougars (26-1) moved up 2 spots to 6th in the USA Today Coaches Top 25 and moved up 1 spot to 8th in the Associated Press Top 25 national polls. Both polls were announced Monday. In addition to those polls, Houston moved up to 4th in the NCAA's latest NET rankings.
Houston received 600 points to rank No. 6 in the Week 16 USA TODAY Coaches' Poll (563 points and 8th in the Week 15 poll). Houston received 1,145 points to rank 8th in the Week 17 Associated Press Top 25 Poll (9th last week with 1085 points in the Week 16 poll).
As of the games played through February 24th, Houston is ranked 4th in the NCAA's NET Rankings. The NET rankings replaced RPI as the primary sorting tool for evaluating teams.
The system relies on game results, strength of schedule, game location, scoring margin, net offensive and defensive efficiency and qualities of wins and losses.
It was approved in July after consultation with the Division I Men's Basketball committee, National Association of Basketball Coaches, top basketball analytics and Google Cloud Professional Services.
The Coogs' next game is Wednesday, February 27, at ECU, at 6 p.m., on ESPN3.
