Houston Cougars 17th in Coaches' Poll; 19th AP Poll; 4th in NCAA's NET Rankings
POSTED: December 31, 2018 -- 2:24 p.m. CST
The Houston Cougars (13-0) moved up two spots in the USA Today / Coaches Top 25 national poll and up three spots in the Associated Press Top 25 national poll. Both polls were announced Monday. In addition to those polls, Houston is ranked 4th in the NCAA's new NET rankings.
Houston received 233 points to land at No. 17 (up from No. 19 last week) in the Week 8 USA TODAY Coaches' Poll and earned 368 points to rank No. 19 in the Week 9 Associated Press Top 25 Poll (up from 22 with 274 points in the Week 8 poll).
This marked the fourth straight week in 2018-19 and the 134th week in program history that the Cougars were ranked by at least one national poll.
As of the games played through December 30th, Houston is ranked 4th in the NCAA's NET Rankings. The NET rankings replaced RPI as the primary sorting tool for evaluating teams.
The system relies on game results, strength of schedule, game location, scoring margin, net offensive and defensive efficiency and qualities of wins and losses.
It was approved in July after consultation with the Division I Men's Basketball committee, National Association of Basketball Coaches, top basketball analytics and Google Cloud Professional Services.
The Coogs' next game is Wednesday, January 2, versus Tulsa, at 7 p.m., inside Fertitta Center. Wednesday's game begins the American Athletic Conference portion of the season for both teams.
