Kelvin Sampson: "Since I've been here, I don't play at somebody's gym without them coming back here."
November 12, 2018 -- 12:38 p.m. CST
In the past, I heard rumblings it was difficult for the Houston Cougars to get teams to agree to a home-and-home series. Therefore, I asked Houston Cougars Head Coach Kelvin Sampson how difficult was it to get to a point where teams would agree to home-and-home match-ups.
Coach Sampson squashed the rumblings I had heard. Firmly and quickly.
"No, they never did that. I refused to do that," Sampson said. "Since I've been here, I don't play at somebody's gym without them coming back here. That'll never happen.
"But, what's happening now is people see us as a good game," Sampson continued. "You don't want to have bad losses. You don't want to play games that really don't do a whole lot for you. Schools from our conference for instance. This is such a tough conference that, win or lose, it's a great game for just about anybody."
Sampson added Houston's future schedules will continue to include match-ups with teams from Power 5 conferences.
"We have a lot of things in the pot," Sampson commented. "Obviously, we know we were going to play Oregon (Saturday, December 1, 8 p.m. inside Fertitta Center) for a long time because we did the schedule. But, we got some real exciting games coming up on the horizon. There's Power 5 schools that we'll be playing home and home with. We always want a couple -- two or 3 high profile -- non-conference games that get people excited about our season as soon as possible."
