Posted: September 3, 2026 -- 4:15 p.m. CT
Today, the Houston Rockets announced they have signed guard Amen Thompson to a contract extension. The deal is reportedly for 5 years, $208 million and includes a 10% trade kicker. He was the fourth overall pick by Houston in the 2023 NBA Draft.
“Amen represents everything we want our organization to be about,” said Rockets General Manager Rafael Stone. “He has elite two-way ability, a toughness and the will to outwork his peers, and he competes in every circumstance. Year over year, he's improved in every facet of his game, and we know his best basketball is ahead of him.”
In 2025-26, Thompson started all 79 games he played while averaging 18.3 points, 7.8 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 1.51 steals in 37.4 minutes per game. He joined Luka Doncic as the only players to have averaged at least 18.0 ppg, 7.0 rpg, 5.0 apg and 1.50 spg. In NBA history, Thompson became the eighth player who was 23 or younger for the majority of a season to have averaged at least 18.0 ppg and 5.0 apg with fewer than 2.5 turnovers per game.
Thompson became the third different Rocket to have led the league in total minutes played (James Harden and Moses Malone twice each). He also led non-center qualifiers in offensive rebounding (3.0 orpg) and ranked second among all players in dunks (201).
Last season, Thompson averaged 18.3 ppg, up from 14.1 in 2024-25 and 9.5 as a rookie in 2023-24. He scored 20+ points 33 times in 2025-26 after doing so a total of 18 times over his first two seasons. He also shot 77.9% from the foul line last season after shooting 68.4% over his first two seasons.
Thompson played the 200th game of his career at Chicago on March 23, 2026. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, he became the third player to have reached his totals of points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks through the first 200 games of a career, joining Lionel Simmons and Chris Webber.
In NBA history, Thompson is one of eight players to have averaged at least 4.0 apg, 2.5 orpg and 1.00 spg through their first three seasons, joining Alvin Adams, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Nikola Jokic, Bill Walton, Webber and Sidney Wicks.
