Coogs defeat Texas Southern, 89-42, on Education Day

HOUSTON, TX (Fertitta Center) -- The Houston Cougars women's basketball team defeated neighborhood foe Texas Southern 89-42 Tuesday afternoon in front of more than three thousand screaming students on "Education Day".

"Tremendous, tremendous job," Ron Hughey, Houston women's hoops head coach said of the raucous turnout. "We had over three thousand little ones today. Tremendous job by everyone in our Marketing Department; Ticketing Department getting those little ones out here and having a great time."

Houston (7-1) led the entire ball game. Bria Patterson swished a corner three-point shot 47 seconds into the game to get the Coogs' offense started.

Texas Southern (1-6) struggled to make shots throughout the game. TSU missed 11 of 14 attempts (21.4 fg%) in the first quarter. The Lady Tigers missed 9 of 13 (30.8 fg%) in the second period; 10 missed shots (out of 16 tries) in the third quarter and 9 misses (13 attempts) in the final quarter.

TSU shot 17 for 56 (30.4 fg%) for the game including an icy 2 for 15 (13.3 3pt%) from three-point range. The Lady Tigers also committed 29 turnovers in the game.

Taniya Lawson scored 12 points to lead Texas Southern.

The Coogs led TSU 21-10 at the end of the first quarter and 41-19 at halftime. Kamryn Jones scored 8 first-half points to lead Houston while Patterson and Maliyah Johnson each scored 7 points.

Johnson scored 9 more points in the second half for a total of 16 points to lead all scorers.

After the game, Johnson said she's getting more comfortable at Houston after her transfer from Pitt: "Very comfortable. Just with my performance and also getting to know my new teammates."

Kamryn Jones: "Queen of Boards" for her team-high 7 rebounds.

Djessira Diawara" "I'm Her" for her perfect shooting (1 for 1 fg; 6 for 6 fts); 8 points and 6 rebounds in 15 minutes.
