After Houston's 61-59 win Friday night over SFA, Houston head coach Ronald Hughey said:
"When you work your tail off to get to a certain point, everybody wants to be acknowledged for that. There are people in this program that came before us who put a lot of work in to get us to where we are today. Today is a monumental day, because we have the chance to get our recognition for the things we've done to get to this point. We'd like to thank the senior administration, Chris Pezman, DeJuena Chizer, President Renu Khator and everyone involved in making this a reality for this program."
Houston junior post Tatyana Hill added, "It feels amazing! When we got the news, I was just so shocked. It's a blessing."
Redshirt-sophomore Miya Crump said of the team's reaction to the news, "The reaction was a lot of excitement. Everybody was excited. Everybody was happy for it; and, I'm especially happy for it.
"It means a lot. It means we're finally getting noticed for the hard work that we do. Simple as that. But, we can't get comfortable. We have to keep working."
"We'll be Nike this year. Finishing out until July of 2021. Jumping into the Jordan just like our guys. Having all exclusive stuff with UH on the shoes with the Jordan (Jumpman log) and all the gear. We're still getting all the details ironed out; but, being one of 6 or 7 -- UCLA just went Jordan as well -- in the country, it's just tremendous. Especially being the only one in Texas -- just like our men.
"It's a great recruiting advantage because all the kids want to wear Jordan; so, they get the chance to play in it; travel in it; and, all of that."
The other women's basketball programs that are part of the Jordan Brand are Georgetown, Marquette, Michigan, North Carolina, Oklahoma, and UCLA.
"It's just tremendous for us and a great honor," Hughey concluded. "We're blessed to have it."
Coach Hughey concluded, "We have a great product here, talking about the University of Houston; the Fertitta Center; all the facilities. We charter flights. Training table. We do everything like all the major (programs); so, why not be a Jordan Brand just to give us just a little step above now."
