UPDATED: August 27, 2019 -- 6:19 p.m. CT

POSTED: August 26, 2019 -- 11:34 a.m. CT

Sunday evening, Laila Blair, one of the top guards in the nation, announced she will attend the University of Houston to continue her academic and athletic career.

"I thank GOD for blessing me with a situation like UH," Blair told me. "Mainly for the fact that I can rep my city playing at one of the highest levels of basketball."

During the 2018-'19 season, Blair, 5'8" guard at Waller High School, averaged 24.5 points, 4.5 assists, 5.5 rebounds, and 5.8 steals per game in 31 games and helped guide the Lady Bulldogs to a bi-district championship and a 28-8 overall record which was the school's best record in 30 years.

Blair added, "UH has been recruiting me since the 8th grade. I really love their program and staff. I get a pure genuine vibe from them! They've never changed since day 1. It’s a blessing that they truly believe in me and my ability."

In his Texas Talent: 2018 UIL State Tournament summary, Mark Lewis of Blue Star Media, states in : "Laila Blair – 2020 – 5-7 – Guard – Houston Wheatley – Physically strong guard…Sharp individual and ball skills…Explosive first step…Creates space with her stepback…Plenty of range…Needs to be more a factor without the ball…An assertive on ball defender"

Blair transferred from Wheatley to Waller HS for her junior (2018-'19) and senior (2019-'20) seasons.

In the May 9, 2018, Premier Basketball Report, Jason Key and Shane Laflin describes Blair's game this way: "Laila Blair (Cy-Fair 17u EYBL) is as pure a scorer as there is in the class. Laila's ability to score on all three levels whether off the catch or bounce will be invaluable as she continues her career."

Some of Blair's other choices for college were Wichita State, Kansas, Texas Tech, San Diego State, and Southern Miss.

The Early Period to sign a National Letter of Intent (NLI) is November 13 to November 20, 2019 while the Regular Period to sign a NLI is April 15 to May 20, 2020.
