The Houston Roundball Review has learned Alecia Smith, a 5'6" point guard from Cedar Hill High School has made a verbal commitment to the Houston Cougars. Smith also had interest in New Mexico and North Texas.
Smith played for the DFW Elite AAU program last year. This year, Smith played for the United Basketball Club (UBC).
Smith is ranked 16th in the Class of 2012 in the state of Texas by Premier Basketball Report.
According to a PBR scouting report, Smith "has a nice spin move to the basket. Very athletic player who can beat quick opponents using back door cuts. Very good ball handler who is just as effective in the passing game. Very quick hands and feet who also has tremendous skills."
Though she's 5'6", Smith has been described as combo guard who is comfortable playing the point guard or the shooting guard position. Smith has a nice mid-range game as well as 3-point shooting range.
Smith averaged 13.3 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game last season for Cedar Hill as the Lady Longhorns finished 20-12 during the 2010-2011 season.
Smith's verbal commitment to the Houston Cougars is the fourth Class of 2012 verbal for head coach Todd Buchanan and the Cougars. Twins Taylor and Tyler Gilbert (6'2") and Marche Amerson (6'0") have committed to the Cougars.
The early National Letter of Intent signing period begins November 9th and ends November 16th. The regular signing period starts April 11, 2012.
