POSTED: January 30, 2024 -- 1:08 p.m. CT
Tuesday afternoon, Houston Cougars senior point guard LJ Cryer was recognized as one of the Top 10 Candidates for the 2024 Jerry West Award, presented by the Naismith Basketball of Fame.
Houston fans can support Cryer in the remaining rounds by participating in Fan Voting, presented by Dell Technologies beginning Feb. 2 at hoophallawards.com. The Fan Vote will count as one committee vote during the finalist selection process.
In March, five finalists will be presented to West and the Hall of Fame's Selection Committee. The Selection Committee for the Jerry West Award is composed of top men's college basketball personnel, including media members, head coaches, sports information directors and Hall of Famers.
The winner of the 2024 Jerry West Award will be presented on a to-be-determined date, along with the other four members of the Men's Starting Five. Additional awards being presented include the Bob Cousy Award (Point Guard), Julius Erving Award (Small Forward), Karl Malone Award (Power Forward), and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award (Center), in addition to the Women's Starting Five.
Earlier this week, Houston teammate and senior point guard Jamal Shead was named to the Bob Cousy Award Top-10 Candidate List.
In 2022-23, Consensus First-Team All-American guard Marcus Sasser received the Jerry West Award, becoming the first Cougar in program history to earn that honor.
Cryer is in his first season at Houston in 2023-24 after transferring from Baylor during the summer.
Cryer has started all 21 games to date this season and leads the Cougars and ranks among the Big 12 Top 10 with 15.1 points per game. He also ranks among the league leaders in field goal percentage (40.0), 3-point field goal percentage (37.8) and 3-point field goals made per game (3.0).
A product of Morton Ranch High School, Cryer tops the Cougars with six 20-point games, including a season-high 24 points against Montana inside Fertitta Center on Nov. 24, 2023.
