POSTED: October 26, 2022 -- 7:31 a.m. CT
Tuesday evening, I spoke with Darius Bowser, the newest member of the Houston Cougars' 2022-23 roster. Bowser all 6'9", 250 pounds of him, joined the Coogs in August 2022 after graduating from Charleston Southern University.
The Coogs had just finished the main part of practice and Darius had a class he needed to attend; but, he took a moment to chat with me before heading to class.
The HRR: Tell folks about yourself. What city did you come from?
Darius: I'm from Gaffney, South Carolina. A little, small country town. Probably about 12,000 people there. I ended up going to Charleston Southern. Finished all 4 years there. I got a degree in public health.
The HRR: How did you end up at Houston? Did you reach out to them or did they reach out to you? How'd that work?
Darius: Late in the summer, I ended up receiving a phone call from Coach K.C. (UH assistant coach K.C. Beard). We exchanged some information; and, from there, I accepted the scholarship.
The HRR: Did you know anything about Houston before that?
Darius: I knew a little bit about Houston. I knew how hard they play on defense. I didn't know too much about Houston the magnitude of it but I knew a little bit.
The HRR: Was it a tough sell (to join the Coogs)?
Darius: Nah, it wasn't a tough sell. It (committing to UH) was the same day.
The HRR: Wow! Okay, so for folks who have not seen you play, what's your skillset?
Darius: What I'm going to bring is a lot of effort. A lot of physicality. That's what I pride myself on. And, I'm a team player.
The HRR: Have you accepted the culture at Houston?
Darius: (smiling) I don't think you got a choice but to accept it.
