Houston Cougars junior guard Quentin Grimes was named to the John R. Wooden Award Late-Season Top 20 Watch List on Monday.

In 2020-21, Grimes has been a leader for the Cougars, who have posted a 15-1 overall record and lead the American Athletic Conference with an 10-1 mark. Houston now stands at No. 5 in both national polls, the program's highest ranking since the 1983-84 season.

This season, Grimes leads the Cougars and ranks third in the American Athletic Conference with 16.8 points per game and is tied for seventh in the league with 6.7 rebounds per contest.

He is one of only three student-athletes to rank among The American's Top-9 leaders in both scoring and rebounding.

Grimes has posted five 20-point games, including a season-high 27 points with 10 rebounds in a win over Alcorn State, and was named The American Player of the Week after averaging 16.5 points and 8.0 rebounds per game in wins over Tulsa and at Temple.

Grimes has scored double-digit points in all but two games this season and grabbed at least six rebounds in 11 games, including a career-high 10 boards against Alcorn State on the way to the first double-double of his career.

He recently was named to the Lute Olson Award Mid-Season Watch List.

The players on the list are considered strong candidates for the 2021 John R. Wooden Award Men's Player of the Year. Players not chosen to the late season list are still eligible for the Wooden Award™ National Ballot. The National Ballot will consist of 15 top players who have proven to their universities that they meet or exceed the qualifications of the Wooden Award. Nearly 1,000 voters will rank in order 10 of those 15 players when voting opens prior to the NCAA Tournament and will allow voters to take into consideration performance during early round games. The Wooden Award All American Team™ will be announced the week of the “Elite Eight” round of the NCAA Tournament. The winner of the 2021 John R. Wooden Award will be presented following the NCAA Tournament in April.
