Former Rice Owl Trey Murphy III chooses Virginia over Houston, Pittsburgh and Villanova

Monday afternoon, Trey Murphy III, 6'8", 200, former Rice Owls sophomore guard / forward, announced he will continue his college basketball career at the University of Virginia.

Last week, Murphy announced he had narrowed his choices to four schools. The Houston Cougars were among the group along with Pittsburgh, Villanova, and Virginia.

Murphy entered the NCAA Transfer Portal on March 28, 2020. Murphy averaged 13.7 points and 5.5 rebounds per game for the Rice Owls in 2019-'20. He shot 43.4% from the floor including 36.8% (75 for 204) from three-point range.

He scored a season-high 25 points November 12th against Northwestern State. Murphy made a season-high 6 three-pointers at La Tech on January 16; and, he pulled down a season-high 10 rebounds at North Texas on January 20.

Unless the NCAA decides to vote and pass legislation to allow immediate eligibility to transfers for the 2020-'21 season, Murphy will sit out the 2020-'21 season and have two seasons of college basketball eligibility remaining.
