Grimes announced his transfer to UH from Kansas on June 27.

Today, once he received news the NCAA granted his waiver request, Grimes tweeted:

Grimes won the 2018 Guy V. Lewis Award which goes to the top boys high school player in the Greater Houston area.

Grimes, a McDonald's High-School All-American, graduated from The Woodlands College Park High School and attended Kansas University for his freshman season in 2018-'19. Despite starting all 36 games as a freshman at KU, some believed Grimes had a disappointing season because he didn't live up to the hype surrounding his consensus top-10 ranking out of high school. Grimes averaged 8.4 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game in slightly more than 27 minutes per game. Grimes shot 38.4% from the floor including 34.0% from three-point range.

Grimes declared for the NBA Draft; however, he pulled his name out of the Draft and announced he was transferring from Kansas. On May 29, Bill Self, Head Coach at Kansas, announced Grimes had entered the NCAA Transfer Portal.
