Houston Cougars 46, Temple Owls 79

Coogs trailed by as much as 36 points in loss to Temple

HOUSTON, TX (Hofheinz Pavilion) -- The Houston Cougars' confidence took another bruise Tuesday night with a 79-46 loss to the Temple Owls in front of an announced crowd of 469. Tuesday's loss drops the Coogs' record to 4-18 overall and 0-11 in the American Athletic Conference.

Temple's Tyonna Williams nailed a three-point shot to start the game; and, Houston's Demetria Foreman sank a jump shot 27 seconds later for a 3-2 score at the 19:19 mark of the first half.

The Coogs didn't score another point for nearly seven minutes. During the drought, the Cougars turned the ball over five times; missed six field goals; and missed two free throws.

While the Cougars were enduring the drought, the Owls (11-11, 5-6) outscored Houston 15-0 to lead 18-2.

Houston sophomore Marche' Amerson ended the drought with a three-point basket; however, after the basket, the Cougars went scoreless for nearly four minutes. Temple increased the lead to 27-5 with 8:02 left till halftime.

Temple's lead grew to 24 points three times before leading 38-18 at halftime. The Owls shot 51.7% (15 for 29) from the floor compared to 33.3% (8 for 24) for the Coogs. Heck, the Coogs were also 0 for 5 from the foul line.

The second half was much like the first half; however, the Coogs did spark to life during a 90 second span with an 8-0 to pull within 20 points (55-35). But, the Owls answered with a 18-25 run to enjoy their largest lead of the game (73-37).

No Cougars player scored in double figures while Temple placed five players in double digits. Temple's Erica Covile scored a game-high 18 points while Shi-Heria Shipp produced a double-double with 15 pints and 12 rebounds.

Marche' Amerson (4 for 16 field goals) and Te'onna Campbell (4 for 5 field goals) each scored nine points to lead the Coogs.

Houston's next game is this Saturday on the road against conference foe Cincinnati. Tip is set for 1 p.m.
