Rice Owls 55, Tulane Green Wave 62

Jessica Kuster surpasses Pat Krieger as the top scorer in Owls' history

HOUSTON, TX (Tudor Fieldhouse) -- History was made Wednesday night as Jessica Kuster became the all-time scoring leader in the history of Rice Owls' women's basketball. With 3:23 left in the second half, Kuster drained a three-point shot to give her 14 points in the game and 1,852 points in her stellar career to surpass Pat Krieger's 32-year scoring record of 1,851 points. Alas, Kuster's milestone was overshadowed by the Owls' 62-55 loss to the Tulane Green Wave.

Neither team shot the ball well from the floor; but, the Owls (10-10 overall, 3-4 in Conference USA) poor foul shooting (7 for 15) in the first half kept them from leading at halftime as the score was tied at 28 at intermission.

The game was nip and tuck for nearly 10 minutes in the second half. The first seven minutes of the second half featured five ties. The Green Wave (15-5, 6-1) used a 9-2 run to lead 47-40 before Owls' junior Maya Adetula scored five consecutive points to cut the Owls' deficit to two (47-45) with 8:26 remaining in the game.

Then, the Owls missed six straight field goals over the next four minutes; and, the Green Wave capitalized and scored nine unanswered points to lead by 11 (56-45) 4:17 on the game clock.

However, after a 30-second timeout, the Owls answered with a 7-0 run. Kuster's history-making three-point shot occurred during the run which trimmed Tulane's lead to just four (56-52) with 2:08 remaining in the ball game.

Unfortunately, the Owls experienced another scoreless drought as Tulane scored six consecutive points over a 90-second span to put the game away.

The Owls shot 34.5% (19 for 55 overall) from the floor including an icy 32.3% (10 for 31) in the second half.

In addition to Kuster's team-high 14 points, she also added 14 rebounds for her 17th double-double of the season and the 58th double-double of her outstanding college career.

The Owls will try to break a three-game losing streak this Saturday afternoon against Southern Miss. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. inside Tudor Fieldhouse.
