However, this news is specualtion without confirmation.

A few weeks ago, I was told the WNBA would run the Comets in 2009.

A decision -- either way -- must be forthcoming because, typically, the WNBA announces its upcoming basketball schedule in December.
<!--

"We knew they were ranked 10 and they showed us why. They were just so aggressive on the offensive rebounding side and defensive rebounding and just aggressive taking it to the hole. They really showed us how it should be done and we can learn from that and I think we will."

Both teams struggled from the field in the first half; but, Baylor's physical strength began taking a toll on Rice as the Owls couldn't keep Baylor senior Rachel Allison off the glass. Allison finished the first half with a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Allison (16 points and 14 rebounds) and sophomore guard Melissa Jones finished the game with double-doubles for Baylor. Jones added 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Baylor finished the first half with a 14 to 2 run in the final 3:08 to take a 45 to 25 lead into the locker rooms.

"I thought the run at the end of the half was a big, big momentum push for us," said Kim Mulkey, Baylor head coach. "I also thought the first five minutes of the second half, we outscored them I think 12 to 2 in the first five minutes. I thought that was important."

Rice trailed 59 to 37 with 15:39 left in the ball game; so, the remaining minutes became a learning experience for the Owls as well as a time to compete and improve.

"We don't really know who we can truly depend on from one game to the next to give us any kind of consistent performance," said Owls head coach Greg Williams. "And that's a coach's nightmare quite honestly. But, we're trying to work through it."

Williams also made a very telling statement about his team's toughness.

"We played scared at times. That will happen sometimes with young players; but, we've got some veteran players that are playing tentative. They're playing scared; and, at this time what are you going to do about that."

Baylor outrebounded Rice 52 to 38 for the game.

"I thought Rachel Allison and Melissa Jones -- their uncanny ability to give us second and third opportunities with offensive rebounding. That's effort. That's will. It takes a little work to be an offensive rebounder; and, I thought those kids just kept getting us more touches."

Allison added, "We weren't hitting our first shots; and, the fact that we didn't we had to rebound our ball and get another shot. Second-chance shots are key in every game. You don't want your opponent to get second-chance shots; but, you want to get as many as you can and we did a really good job of that tonight."

After the game, Allison was modest describing her performance.

"I don't think it was anything that I did. I just fed off what my teammates did. Our scoring was pretty balanced; and, that's what we have to do to win is produce."

For the third time in their four games thus far this season, five Lady Bears (4-0) scored in double-figures led by Allison's 16 points.

In addition to Baylor's dominance on the glass, the Lady Bears also attempted 38 free throws (making 25) to just 19 attempts for the Owls.

"They shoot 38. We shoot 19," said Coach Williams. "Usually the team that shoots the most free throws is the more aggressive team and that exemplies that they were. They made six more than we even shot."

Coach Mulkey commented on how the women's game is more physical now compared to previous years.

"In the Big 12, it's almost 'no blood no foul'. As aggressive as we are, I can assure you there's probably 20 teams in the country that are as aggressive. That's just the way the women's game has evolved now. You have to play hard. The little touch fouls are no more. You're out their battling and banging. Bigger, faster, stronger now-a-days That's in a lot, a lot of places."

The Owls (2-1) host Furman this Tuesday afternoon. Tip is set for high noon.

"That's a quick turnaround for us," Coach Williams acknowledged. "We'll see. That's the beauty of a quick turnaround. You get a chance to see if we truly learned anything about playing harder, playing tougher and sustaining it for a 40 minute game."
<!--

Clearly, Houston's win over a team from the highly touted Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) is a nice feather in the cap for Conference USA; but, more importantly, the win may boost the confidence of the young Houston squad.

Houston (3-1) suffered a 69 to 47 loss on the road to Oregon State earlier this week; and, for all practical purposes, that game was over by halftime. However, the Lady Cougars continued to compete in the second half and actually won those 20 minutes of action.

"We started to scatter and we lost our composure," said Houston head coach Joe Curl on the loss to Oregon State. "At halftime, we had a 'come to Jesus' meeting about competing. It wasn't a matter of winning the ball game at that point. The team really grew up in that second half."

The second half showing helped UH in the matchup with Miami Friday night inside Hofheinz Pavilion.

The Hurricanes (1-2) jumped to a 10 to 4 lead thanks to eight points from LaToya Cunningham; but, Houston responded to the challenge to tie the game at 10. Once UH's sophomore sensation, Courtney Taylor, put Houston ahead 12 to 10, Houston led the rest of the first half and took a 34 to 30 lead into the locker rooms.

Taylor produced eight points and six rebounds in the half; but, teammate Jasmine Johnson (sophomore guard) came off the bench and sparked UH with 10 points (4 for 6 from the field) and four rebounds. Freshman point guard Porsche Landry added eight points in the first half.

"It's not about what I did," said Jasmine Johnson. "It's about team. I just did whatever I needed to do to help my team win."

Miami began the second half with a 7 to 2 burst to lead 37 to 36 with 18:16 remaining; however, Houston's Brittney Scott (sophomore guard) drained her first of four second-half three point shots to put the Lady Cougars back on top.

The game see-sawed back and forth for the next eight minutes until Houston's lone senior Zane Jakobsone broke a 53 to 53 tie with a made jumper. Then, Brittney Scott hit another three-point shot to give Houston a 58 to 53 lead with 8:53 remaining in the game. Jakobsone scored all eight of her points in the second half to help UH keep the Hurricanes at bay.

"I thought Zane stepped in and did an incredible job not only offensively but defensively," Curl commented.

Miami made one final push thanks to freshman forward Shenise Johnson. Johnson made key plays on offense and defense to pull Miami within three points (twice) in the final two and a half minutes. Johnson finished the game with a game-high 21 points.

Miami sent Houston to the foul line; but, Taylor and Landry combined to shoot 7 for 8 from the charity stripe to help seal Houston's victory.

Taylor scored 16 points and grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds for her third double-double in four games.

"Boxing out is important because, as a small line up, you have people that are taller than you which could cause easy put backs which can get you down; so, boxing out is very important," commented the 6'0" Taylor.

Landry and Johnson eached scored 13 points while Brittney Scott finished the game with 12 points.

"I think that was a big win for us," Taylor said after the game. "Last year, we started out super slow. Miami is a very big win. We know they were after us because we had beaten them three years straight."

Houston heads back to the road this Tuesday, November 25, with a game versus top-25 TCU. The Owls shot 10 for 29 (34.5%); but, the Lady Panthers (or Pantherettes) repeatedly broke down the Owls defense and went 10 for 12 from the foul line.

"I was disappointed in how they got to the rim so much," said Owls head coach Greg Williams on his team's perimeter defense.

Prairie View attacked the basket often throughout the game; but, PV simply struggled to finish their drives with made baskets. Prairie View made only 15 of their 55 field goal attempts in the game for a frigid 27.3%.

"We've just got to learn how to finish," said PV head coach Cynthia Cooper-Dyke.

Rice scored the first seven points of the second half to lead 33 to 20; then, PV turned up the intensity on offense and defense to tie the game at 35.

"I take pride in the fact we came back from 13 points down in the second half," Cooper-Dyke added. "But, I'd also like to note we should have been down 13 points in the first place."

Coop continued to get specific on her teams travails.

"What we needed to do was fix some small things like making lay-ups; like making free throws; taking care of the ball. I thought we played hard -- that was one battle won. The next thing we have to do is come and execute in the half-court offense and learn how to finish games."

After PV guard Gatti Werema made two free throws to give the Pantherettes a 45 to 42 lead with 2:16 remaining in the game, PV did not score the rest of the game.

Rice freshman post Candace Ashford hit two free throws at the 1:52 mark to pull Rice within one (45 to 44).

Prairie View (1-2) forward Chari Smith missed a jump shot at 1:36; but, Rice committed a turnover on their next possession. Candice Thomas missed another jump shot which would have given Prairie View a three point lead; Morgan Mayse rebounded the missed shot at the 43 second mark.

Rice junior guard Tara Watts missed a contested three-point shot with 21 seconds remaining; and Prairie View picked up the the team rebound. Smith was fouled by Ashford with 17 seconds left in the game. Smith, who was 3 for 4 from the foul line up to that point in the game, missed both foul shots.

Rice (2-0) rebounded the miss and called timeout with 13 seconds remaining. The Owls executed a great play which resulted in a great shot by Mayse with six seconds on the clock. The shot attempt rimmed out; but, Prairie View was unable to hold the rebound and Rice kept possession with just three seconds on the clock. After a 30 second timeout, the Owls scrambled to inbound the ball; Maudess Fulton caught the pass; but, she passed to Mayse and Mayse broke the hearts of the PV fans by swishing the shot as the game clock expired.

Mayse led the Owls with 14 points and nine rebounds.

Candice Thomas led PV with 14 points while Chari Smith added 11 points and 10 rebounds.

"I feel bad for Cynthia and her team," said Greg Williams after the game. "That was a grind it game for both teams. Both teams were struggling to score. Both teams showed a lot of heart. They competed hard. Shots weren't falling for either team. They (shots) were at a premium. We just happened to hit one at the buzzer setting the table for our match up with Baylor on Sunday."

Rice hosts top ten Baylor Sunday, November 23, at 2 p.m.
<!--

Houston (2-0) won for the second time in less than 24 hours following Friday night's home opening victory over Southeastern Louisiana 73 to 58.

Sophomore center Cobilyn Hill led Houston with 18 points. Hill also grabbed 13 boards and controlled the paint with six blocked shots. All five Houston starters scored in double figures. Brittney Scott added 17 points (6 for 12 from the field, including 4 for 7 on threes). Teammate Courtney Taylor added her second double-double on the young season with 15 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Freshmen guards Porsche Landry and Roxana Button each added 12 points. Landry (seven) and Button (four) also dished out 11 assists combined.

"I think it (Houston's depth) is a plus," said Courtney Taylor. "Because teams aren't going to be able to step everybody. Last year, we had two or three main scorers; so, when we struggled, we didn't have anyone who could step up. This year we have a lot of scorers and that's going to help us."

"I think our depth really helped us," said UH head coach Joe Curl. "I really feel in my heart we can do that on many, many nights."

Houston led Gardner-Webb 35 to 24 thanks to stifling defense in the first half which limited the Runnin' Bulldogs to 10 for 39 shooting from the field for just 25.6%.

Houston used a 15 to 8 run in the first seven minutes and five seconds of the second half to lead 50 to 32.

Gardner-Webb refused to go away and answered Houston's run with a 11 to 3 run over the next two minutes and 51 seconds to pull within 10 points (53 to 43) with 10:04 left in the ball game.

"We were in a dog fight when they cut it to ten points," Coach Curl admitted. "We had to get on our girls a little and get them to grind it out; and, all of a sudden it's a 20 point game."

Hill helped Houston end Gardner-Webb's final run when she began a 10 to 0 blitz with a layup with 5:04 remaining.

"I started slow," Hill said after the game. "But, I picked it up at the end. I just knew we had to win."

Houston's next game will be on the road versus Oregon State for a match up on Wednesday, November 19.
<!--

How are you feeling?
“In one of the practices, I kind of tweaked my knee a little bit. I think they said it was a sprain or a bone bruise. It took a while before it healed enough so I could do everything. Now, it doesn’t hurt at all. We were really happy the MRI should there are no problems at all. No surgery or anything. I’m all good. I’m good.”

What’s different between this season and last season for you?
“I think I’ve gotten a lot more confidence. Freshman year, I came in and I was really, really nervous. I let the anxiety get to me. I think I’m in a lot better shape. The weights and the conditioning that we did in the preseason really prepared me a lot for practice. I don’t feel like I’m about to do in practice. I feel like I can do more stuff; I can be more a part of things. I’m better mentally and physically.”

Have you gotten stronger? Are you lifting more weight than you did last year?
“I am stronger. My legs have gotten a lot stronger. My arms are getting there. You can’t really tell (laughing) honestly. But, I’m a lot stronger than when I came here last season. I’m probably four times stronger than I was before. We have a new weight coach; and, he seems to know what he’s doing; so, hopefully, I’ll get a lot stronger. My whole body is aching for the work.”

What’s going to be your role on the team this season?
“That’s a hard question. Last year, since we had so many posts; and, we had Val (Valeriya Berezhynska) who was kind of like a power post. I felt like I was more of a cheerleader; but, this year, I feel like I’ll be in the games more. I’m trying to improve my offense and contribute that way; but, defensively, that’s where I hope to contribute the most with rebounds and blocks.”

Describe the style of play for the team this season.
“The way it looks there’s going to be a lot of movement. That’s what we’ve worked on in practice. We’ve had a lot a conditioning -- a lot harder conditioning this year than last year; we’re in much better shape. I feel like we’re going to be quick and we’re going to move a lot.

The Owls will officially open the "House of Tudor" this Friday evening, November 14, versus Cal State Northridge. Unlike the first match up on Halloween night, the Lady Tigers did not pick up a win as TSU lost to the Jaguars 60 to 57 in overtime tonight.

With 0.81 seconds left in the second half, TSU Junior guard / forward Jamelah Lewis sent the game into overtime by draining two free throws to tie the game at 51.

Former Houston Lady Cougar Brittani Williams hit a three-point shot to give the Jaguars a 58 to 55 lead with 1:38 left in the extra session. The Jaguars never trailed during those final 98 seconds.

"It was a great test for us," said TSU head coach Yolanda Wells-Broughton after the game. "I feel like we still have a long ways to go obviously. A lot of our weaknesses were exposed. Mainly in the turnovers. I feel like at least sixty percent of the turnovers -- of the 30 we got -- were self-inflicted."

TSU shot an ice cold 16.7% (5 for 30) in the first half and trailed the Jaguars 29 to 20 at halftime; however, TSU started the second half with more defensive pressure and forced the Jaguars to turn over the ball. The pressure defense helped TSU surge to a 13 to 3 run which put the Lady Tigers ahead 33 to 32 with 13:04 left in the second half.

"We felt like our veterans needed to set the tone for us offensively (to start the second half); so, we made a few adjustments and went that route," Coach Wells-Broughton added.

The Jaguars were led by Brandi Jones' 21 points. We hope that by this month's end an owner will have been chosen. We are meeting with individuals and groups to see who would lead the Comets in the direction we need to be headed.

In our efforts to keep the Comets in Houston, We have set goals for 2009 season tickets. The league and our COO believes that if we are able to reach/exceed these goals, we will have the numbers to show the potential owner that Houston has a solid fan base. We feel that this will sway the new owners decision to keep the Comets here in Houston and improve here as opposed to moving the team to another city or state and re-building elsewhere.

Our goals were as follows:

As a team we needed to have 85% of our current season ticket holders return by November 15, 2008. I personally have the greatest number of season ticket holders and only 45% of them have turned as of today (November 3, 2008).

Next, as a team we needed 1200 new season ticket holders to commit to the 2009 season, with each season ticket holder representative commit to 200 new season ticket holders. Currently I have the most new season tickets, but I only have 30 of my 200.

I'm sharing this with you, because I need your help to reach/exceed my goal in our efforts to keep the Comets here in Houston. I thank each of you that have renewed and purchased additional seats on your account to help. I also want to thank those of who have purchased tickets and donated them to organizations like TexasTicKids.com and the Sam Houston Council Girl Scouts of America. If you have not committed to your 2009 season seats, now is the time to act.

In 2007, it was up to the owner to keep the team here. We’ve got kids that can play. We’ve got a great balance between the old kids and the young kids. Sometimes you can be ‘senior laden’ or ‘freshmen laden’ and we’ve got a balance. The competition is unbelievable. Our three returning starters may not start this year because our young kids are coming on hard in practice; however, the returning players have done ‘it’ against the Dukes; the Tennessees; the Oklahomas. We have to make sure our young players understand they’re not going against Duncanville or against a junior college team; but, they’re facing high level Division I teams.”

How’s the health of the team? –
“It’s getting better. Sydney Colson is going to be a surprise. We’re going to get her back (tore her ACL in June) quicker than we thought. There’s an outside chance we could have her for a few minutes in our first ball game which is November 14. Now, that may be a bit of a reach; but, I’m hoping for the best because I need my General out there.

“We’re monitoring Danielle Gant because she had a scope (arthroscopic surgery) done this summer; so, she hasn’t been able to do much for a few months. We’re bringing her along slowly because we don’t have to worry about her conditioning. She’s always in good shape. We just have to make sure she can go through and be ready to play 35 minutes a game at whatever position we play her.”

With Sydney not yet back, discuss your point guard situation…
“Every day there’s a new person out there. Tyra has to be more forceful; and, she has to add to her game. She has to learn how to play defense the Aggie way. I think the redshirt season helped her mature; get over the homesickness; and learn how hard you have to play at this level. She’s what is described as a glider. You don’t think she’s playing hard; but, she makes plays. I think she’s going to really step us for us this year. She’s picked to be Big 12 Freshman of the Year for the second year in a row. I don’t believe that’s happened before. I don’t want her to picked a third year in a row. I’d like to keep her healthy this year. Hopefully, she’ll be able to play a lot of minutes for us – both at the two (shooting guard) and the three (wing position).”

How about freshman forward Adaora Elonu? --
“There’s a good chance she might start for us. She’s coming on strong every day. I picked up the stats sheet the other day and she had 11 rebounds and LaToya Micheaux had one. I asked Micheaux what happened; and, she said, ‘She’s picking up all the shots before I can get there.’ I said ‘Micheaux you have to be instinctive and quicker to the ball.’

“Adaora can possibly be Big 12 Freshman of the Year. Don’t rule her out because she’s going to get the minutes to prove herself.”

Any thoughts on being picked fifth in the Big 12 Preseason Coaches’ Poll?
“That’s locker room stuff right there. A lot of it is due to the nature of how you vote. When the coaches voted in September, we voted on how we thought people would finish not who the five (or the six) best teams are. You vote on how you think the teams would finish; and, there’s no way you could list five teams in the (Big 12) South one through five. It’s impossible with the numbers.

“In the (Big 12) North, when you look at Iowa State and what Coach Fennelly (Bill Fennelly) has coming back and how good a coach he is, Iowa State might be picked to win it because it’s hard to beat them in Ames, Iowa. Iowa State used to be guard dominated; but, this season he’s got the post players to get it done. He’s going to have a lot of balance; and, obviously, he’s the best zone team in our league.

“I wouldn’t be surprised to see Iowa State win it; but, hopefully, we’ll have something to say about that. I like my team. I like my chances; but, what we have to do is get off to a better start in the League than what we’ve done the last three years. We’ve lost to Kansas State (to start conference play) two years in a row. This year we start with Missouri; and, we don’t need to stumble there.”
<!--

I interviewed 'Shorty' in July; so, now that practice has begun, I checked with her again to see how she's adjusting to life as a college student and a college basketball player.

What has surprised you so far? –
“Practicing six days then one day off – I did that in high school – but, we’re practicing longer now. You don’t stop. Practice is continuous. You don’t stop. You run this drill. You run that drill. Then, you get a sip of water. Then, you get back on the court. I think that’s a huge transition; and, plus everybody is competitive all the time. In high school, we were competitive sometimes but here everybody is competitive all the time every second, every drill.”

Compare summer school to school now –
“Summer school and regular school – there’s no comparison at all. In summer school, you get a totally different view compared to starting Fall academics. I have five classes. I have study hall; plus practice; plus individual workouts if you’re a freshman; plus studying; plus sleep. Forget about the sleep. The sleep is last.”

How have you adjusted to everything? –
“It’s hard because I’m a sleep person. I’m kind of losing it; but, I have to say I’m getting used to everything. But, I think I’ll get accustomed to everything. Give me about two more weeks. Once the season starts, I think I’ll be fine.”
<!--

Fulton (5'10, guard) accepts the challenge and embraces it.

“I am. I am. This (being a vocal leader) is something I'm stepping into with baby steps; but, it's something my team needs. I'm definitely going to be as vocal as possible. I feel like we’ve really been gelling. We’ve used these practices to get to know one another since we have such a young team. I think we’re coming together. I really do. We’re young; but, we’re learning each other’s plays. We’re playing good defense; so, I think we’re going to do well. It’s been a good bonding and gelling experience.”

“As young teams usually do, we have mental lapses sometimes; but, if continue to limit those lapses, we’ll be fine. We had a good practice overall just a couple of mental lapses.”

The Owls are implementing a motion offense this season and Fulton believes the change will be beneficial to the squad.

“This year we’re doing a lot more movement and more driving and kicking (passing the ball to the corners). I think it will be conducive to the team we have this season. We want to do a lot more running; so, I think, with the players we have, we should be good (with the motion offense).”

Rice only has one healthy player, freshman post Candace Ashford, who is 6'2 or taller; so, the lack of height in the front court could be problematic for the Owls against taller opponents this season.

“Yea, we’re not tall; but, I think we have a lot of people that can transition from post to wing; so, I think the lack of height will work in our favor. We’re going to be quick and run the floor well; so, I think we’re going to use it to our advantage.”

This summer, Fulton worked a "real job"; but, she definitely found time to work on her basketball skills.

“This summer I worked; but, I also practiced as much as I could. I played a lot of open gym just to sharpen my skills. I want to be a better shooter; so, I worked a lot on my shot; and, a lot of game-time shooting. Not just a lot of shots; but, also people defending me and then shooting the ball.”

The Owls were picked to finish ninth (tied with the University of Houston) in the Conference USA Preseason Coaches' Poll; but, Fulton has hopes to prove the doubters wrong.

“My expectations are we’re going to be a lot better than people believe. I believe people have low expectations for us; but, I believe we play well as a unit. We’re young; we run; we play hard; so, I think those are definitely going to be our advantages and we’re going to use them. I think we’re definitely going to do well.”
<!--

We’re a young team with five new players and only two seniors and two juniors on the team. We graduated more points than any team in the conference (Conference USA). We lost 65 percent of our scoring. The thing that has been the biggest plus thus far in practice has been our scoring. In all the competitive things that we’ve done, I wasn’t sure if we’re going to be able to score; but, we’ve done well. Hopefully, that doesn’t mean we’re just horribly defensively because we know we’re going to have to been an outstanding defensive team. With five new players, the team has been up and down with how much they can learn. A couple of freshmen are a bit overwhelmed with so much so early. That’s all part of the process. We have to keep moving on; so, we can get all of our stuff in before we start playing. All in all, knock on wood, we remain relatively healthy -- only one injury thus far to Melissa Whitmeyer. We’ll find out more tomorrow.

“Our kids have worked hard; and, that’s all we can ask for as coaches. We’re still a work in progress, obviously, with the inexperience that we’re going to have. We’re going to be young in the backcourt; but, we like our two freshmen point guards and what they’re doing thus far in D’Frantz (D'Frantz Smart) and Amenemope (Amenemope McKinney). Really, all four of our freshmen have shown that they’re not going to be too far behind. Candace Ashford will have to play more this season with the offseason injury to Jackie Stanley. Candace has been a real pleasant surprise in the preseason with her ability to score. She gives us some size and some bulk as well.”

It seems like you’re to going to play more pressure defense in order to counter your lack of size in the front court –
“We’ve been so short-handed the last few years. We haven’t been able to press as much as we would like; and, we’ve been so thin at the point guard. Kadie Riverin had to play 35 plus minutes a night at the point the last three years. A lot of the pressure defense comes from your point guard; and, we couldn’t ask her to do that without a quality backup. We do have more depth at the point guard this year and that’s going to allow us to play a little bit more full court pressure. We don’t have great size inside. So, we are going to have be aggressive on the perimeter and use the depth that we have there, as well as the athleticism on the perimeter, so that teams can’t just come down the court and pound the ball down our throats if they have an advantage inside – which most teams will have against us this year.

“Because of the injuries to Jackie and possibly Melissa (Melissa Whitmayer), Megan Elliot is going to have play in the post. She’s very capable of doing that; but, she’s just six foot; Emery (Emery Carter) is 6’1”; Morgan (Morgan Mayse) is 6’1”; and Candace is 6’2”. We don’t have Lauren Neaves in there anymore or Val (Valeriya Berezhynska) at 6’4”. We will have to be more pressure oriented; and, fortunately, I believe we are going to have the depth to do that this year.”
<!--

The Aggies won the Big 12 Conference Tournament Championship; and, for the first time in the program's history, advanced to the Elite Eight (Regional Final) of the 2008 NCAA Women's Championship Tournament. Despite losing to the eventual NCAA champs, Tennessee, in the Regional Final, the Ags hope to build on last season's success and remember the positives and the negatives from the fact they were mere minutes from advancing to the Women's Final Four for the first time.

As a sign of last season's successes, the Aggies players are wearing a championship ring representing the Big 12 Conference Tourney title and the trip to the Elite Eight. The ring is a reminder of the success the team enjoyed; but, also a reminder of work still needed in order to accomplish the ultimate prize -- an NCAA Championship.

"The ring feels heavy," described Aggies senior guard Takia Starks. "It's pretty heavy. It's kind of weird. I'm not used to wearing rings. Our last ring was our Big 12 Championship ring and it was kind of small; but, this ring is definitely a symbol of our success and how far we can go."

The ring was designed by last season's senior group of guard A'Quonesia Franklin; wing Morenike Atunrase; and forward Patrice Reado.

"They all came up with the design," added Starks. "The ring was dedicated to the seniors; so, they got to pick the design."

Senior center LaToya Micheaux added, "Our seniors made this ring and I'm very proud of it. It shows how much hard work we put into earning it last season.

"We started 0 and 4 in the Big 12; and, a lot of people didn't believe in us anymore. What we did was go to Bible Study -- a lot of people don't that about us -- and once we started getting back to the Lord and staying with Bible Study, the winning kept coming.

"We wanted this ring. I didn't wear the other ring (Big 12 Regular season Champs) because it's too small. If we wanted this big one, we had to go out there and get it done. When we got to the (Big 12) Conference Tournament, we said, 'If this is what we want, we have to go out and get it.'

"We have the 'Elite Eight' on this ring; and, that's something we'll always cherish. We had the lead (versus Tennessee) -- we were up five points with three minutes left in the game. This ring means a lot. We're happy to have this ring; but, it also reminds us how hard we have to work this season."

Micheaux admitted she still thinks about the Regional Final loss to Tennessee (53 to 45).

"I do. A lot of people didn't believe we belonged there. People thought we weren't a top 10 team. That game showed we can compete with the best of the best. Now, we're trying to be a top 10 program and maintain it. That game meant more than just winning or losing.
