Owls Sweep C-USA Weekly Honors
The Rice Owls picked up their first two wins of the 2009 - 2010 season over the weekend; and, redshirt sophomore Jackie Stanley and freshman Jessica Goswitz were two reasons for wins.
Today, Conference USA recognized the two of them for their standout play last week:
IRVING, Texas - Rice University swept this week's Conference USA women's basketball weekly award honors, marking the first time this season a program has taken both accolades. After averaging a double-double with 27 points and 11 rebounds per game junior F Jackie Stanley was selected as the C-USA Player of the Week, while teammate Jessica Goswitz was voted Freshman of the Week. Goswitz averaged seven points, 4.5 assists, 4.0 rebounds in Rice's two wins last week.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
JACKIE STANLEY, RICE
6-2, Jr., F (Wylie, Texas/Kansas State)
Stanley led Rice to its first two victories of the season by averaging a double-double with 27 points and 11 rebounds per game. For her efforts she was selected as the MVP of the Gene Hackerman Invitational. She had a game-high 18 points and eight rebounds in 29 minutes vs. UT-Pan American and followed that with a career and game-high 36 points and career and game-high 14 rebounds vs. Sam Houston State in the championship game. Stanley's 36 points, 14 field goals made and 26 attempted was a C-USA single-game weekly best as well as her .889 (8-of-9) performance from the free throw line. This is Stanley's first Player of the Week honor.
FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
JESSICA GOSWITZ, RICE
5-5, Fr., G (Knoxville, Tenn.)
Goswitz averaged seven points, 4.5 assists, 4.0 rebounds in Rice's two wins last week. She led the Owls with nine assists and a team-high five steals. She scored seven points against both UT-Pan American and Sam Houston State. Goswitz also had six rebounds against SHSU and six assists vs. UTPA. This is her first Freshman of the Week award.
