Owls Get Into Win Column

HOUSTON, TX (Tudor Fieldhouse) -- The Rice Owls did something Friday night they had yet to do this season -- win a ball game. The Owls defeated Texas-Pan American 71-47 in the second game of the Owls' Gene Hackerman Invitational before 445 fans gathered inside Tudor Fieldhouse to get out of the cold.

After trailing the Broncs 8 to 7, Rice freshman forward Brianna Hypolite sparked a 24 to 9 scoring run to give the Owls a 31 to 17 halftime lead. Hypolite swished two consecutive three-point baskets from the same spot on the court during the run and added a layup and a jumper to score 10 points in the first half.

"Brianna Hypolite came off the bench and really gave us a spark in the first half," said Owls head coach Greg Williams after the game. "She hit back-to-back threes that kind of busted the game open. She had by far her best game of the year."

Hypolite finished the game with a team-high tying 18 points in just 19 minutes of action. Teammate Jackie Stanley also scored 18 points. Stanley shot 8 for 13 from the field and pulled down eight rebounds. Junior post Morgan Mayse grabbed a game-high 11 boards for the now 1-6 Owls.

Hypolite's 18 points helped the Owls' bench outscore the Broncs 35 to 5. Owl's sophomore guard Amenemope McKinney added 10 points; five rebounds; three steals; two assists; and one blocked shot in her 22 minutes of action.

"Amenemope McKinney gave us some great minutes off the bench", Williams added.

Owls' senior point guard Shyrelle Horne scored five points during a 17 to 11 spurt to give the Owls a 20 point lead (48 to 28) with 13:44 remaining in the second half.

"Shyrelle has really been playing well. She's leading the team in assists. She got four (assists) tonight with only one turnover. I'm really happy for her. She's really playing at about as a high level as she can her play."

Rice extended the lead to as much as 26 points (61 to 35) in the second stanza.

The Owls limited the Broncs to just 29.6% (16 for 54) field goal shooting while making 40.0% (26 for 65). Rice outrebounded Texas-Pan American 50 to 35 as well.

Owls freshman forward Lacey Neu injured her left knee during the second half. Neu was helped to the bench and left the game on crutches.

"She's a kid we were counting on to contribute to our team," Williams said. "It's tragic; but, we've our had more than our share of injuries here at Rice. My heart goes out to her. That kind of takes the air out of the balloon when a kid goes down."

The Owls will play Sam Houston State Saturday night, at approximately 7:05 p.m., in the championship game of the Gene Hackerman Invitational. The Bearkats (3-3) defeated Jackson State (1-5) 76-60 in the earlier game Friday evening.
