Lady Tigers Top Texas State
HOUSTON, TX (H&PE Arena) -- The Texas Southern University Lady Tigers picked up their first home win of the season 64 to 57 Saturday afternoon over the Texas State Bobcats.
"It was long over due and much needed," said TSU head coach Yolanda Broughton. "We have to protect home court."
TSU trailed Texas State 31 to 30 at halftime; but, junior forward Jasmine Payne scored five points in the first four minutes of the second half to give TSU a 37 to 36 lead which they would not relinquish.
Texas Southern led the Bobcats (2-3) by as much as nine points (57 to 48) in the final three minutes; however, Texas State freshman guard Diamond Ford (from Hightower High School) scored five points down the stretch to help make the game interesting.
"Our players never let up," Broughton added.
Payne was outstanding in the second half. She scored all 17 of her game-high points in the second half. Payne went to work on the low left block. When she received a pass in the post, she turned over her right shoulder and hit three turnaround jumpers as smooth as silk.
Three other Lady Tigers scored in double figures: 12 points from Nadosha Strickland and 10 points each from Inisha Daughtry and Sierra Highgate.
Teammate Trikeyia East grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.
Texas Southern (2-4) played without starting point guard Jasmine Cannon.
"We're hoping to have her back in the next couple of days or so," said Coach Broughton.
Highgate (five assists) and freshman Krissica Harper (three assists) did a solid job running the offense.
"My point guards stepped up. I'm really proud of them. They did exactly what we needed."
Texas Southern has a very, very quick turnaround as they travel to Nacogdoches and play Stephen F. Austin Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m.
