Houston Blasts North Texas

HOUSTON, TX (Hofheinz Pavilion) -- The Houston Cougars raced past the North Texas Mean Green throughout the first half and cruised to a 104 to 65 victory in front of a very loud 373 fans Saturday night inside Hofheinz Pavilion.

Houston's junior guard Brittney Scott was unstoppable. Scott scored a career-high 32 points in the ball game; but, 27 of those points came in a scintillating first half!

Scott shot 10 for 15 from the field in the opening 20 minutes including a career-high 5 for 6 from three point range. When Scott wasn't swishing threes and hitting tough pull jump shots, she found time to hand out three assists and pick up two steals.

"Well, I got a phone call from my grandma and she told me all of Orange (Orange, TX) was coming to see me play," Scott said on her motivation before the game. "I couldn't let my grandma down."

Scott added, "I didn't know how many points I had. I was just in the zone. I didn't really see the opponent. I just felt it. I really can't explain it."

Thanks to Scott's 27 first half points, Houston led the Mean Green 58 to 32 at the break. Ironically, North Texas (3-6) led Houston 8 to 4 before the onslaught began.

The game was over and the rout was on.

Six Cougars scored in double figures. The 104 points were the first time Houston had scored 100 plus points since December 1, 2002, in a 106-54 win over Sam Houston State.

The Coogs pushed the ball at every opportunity.

"We watched film and saw that they pressed a lot; so, our objective was to get the ball out as quick as we can," said B-Scott.

Brittany Mason added, "I like running. Period. It was cool with me to hear the coaches say, 'We need to get the ball in. We need to push the ball at all times and it was working. It just keeps us going; and, our adrenaline was flowing, and we just kept running."

After a slow start to the game, Lesslee Mason produced her second double-double of the season with 10 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.

"Basically, my job is to rebound," Lesslee said after the game. "Coach tells me to get every rebound possible. Points kind of come with it."

Brittany Mason scored a career-high 10 points for the Coogs; however, Mason said she was "krunk" for Brittney Scott's first half scoring spree.

After losing three straight ball games, Houston (5-3) has won two straight games by a combined 71 points.

"We really needed to focus; get back down to business and get out of that losing streak," Scott said. "The last two opponents had to pay for it."

Houston's next game is on the road versus Texas-San Antonio, Monday, December 7, at noon.
