C-USA Announces 2009 All-Conference Teams
IRVING, TX -- Conference USA announced their 2009 All-C-USA Women's Basketball Teams Tuesday.
C-USA women's basketball coaches, sports information directors and selected media members (including yours truly) participated in the voting. The results were just as unpredictable as the regular-season standings. Three teams were in the running for the regular-season title on the final day of the regular season before SMU emerged as the outright champion. Of the 15 member all-conference team, only five are seniors.
The league should announce Coach of the Year, Player of the Year, and Defensive Player of the Year shortly.
I voted for Houston's Courtney Taylor for Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. I also tabbed Houston's Joe Curl as Coach of the Year.
Since the talent level in the Conference is spread evenly throughout the league, my choices were not easy at all.
I picked Taylor because off her exceptional stats in so many categories. She was 4th in scoring (16.5 ppg); 3rd in rebounding (10.1 rpg); 4th in steals (2.29 spg); and 4th in blocked shots (1.75 bpg).
I chose Joe Curl for COY because he helped guide a Houston team - with just one senior - picked to finish tied for 7th in the preseason C-USA poll to an 11-5 conference record and a three-way tie for second place just one game behind SMU.
