Aggies Top TCU 64-50
COLLEGE STATION, TX -- The Texas A&M Aggies improved to 10 and 0 on the season with an impressive 64 to 50 victory over the TCU Lady Frogs in a battle of two top 25 teams in front of 5,395 fans inside Reed Arena.
The Lady Frogs led the Aggies 9 to 6 four minutes into the game; however, the Aggies limited the Lady Frogs to just 14 points the final 15 plus minutes of the first half.
Texas A&M senior guard Takia Starks scored 18 points in the first half (7 for 10 from the field) and helped the Aggies take a 35 to 21 lead into the locker room. Starks finished the game with a team-high 21 points.
Neither team shot the ball well in the first half. TCU shot 27.8% (5 for 18) while the Aggies shot 35.9% (14 for 39) from the field.
The Aggies picked up nine steals in the first half and forced TCU to turn the ball over 13 times in the first half and a season-high 23 times in the ball game.
TCU's head coach Jeff Mittie praised the Aggies' pressure defense.
"It's the best pressure we've seen. All five; and, not five, they run them in. He's (Aggies' head coach Gary Blair) got a deep bench. Gary's done an excellent job with this program and this team."
TCU (8-4) found a better rhythm offensively in the second half and scored a few lay ups on back door cuts; but, the Ags never allowed the Lady Frogs to get any closer than six points in the second half.
"We just couldn't make that one run to get into it. We couldn't make enough shots to get back into it."
TK LaFleur led the Lady Frogs with a game-high 22 points. LaFleur shot 8 for 18 from the field; but, she also committed nine turnovers.
Aggies senior center LaToya Micheaux pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds and picked up a game-high four steals.
Micheaux says she and her teammates have set very high standards for this season.
"Undefeated. It starts from our regular season. We want to win a ring there. We want to go to the tournament and win a ring there because this is the best team that I've played on. We have the talent to take it to that level."
Coach Blair had a different take on the Aggies' going undefeated.
"We take it one game at a time. You saw what happened to New England (Patriots) in football last year. The 10 and 0 start feels good because of the body of work we have put in from the first week of August until now."
The undefeated Aggies will enjoy Christmas Break for the next few days before returning to practice and preparing for a December 30th home game versus New Mexico.
