UH Beats Jaguars
HOUSTON, TX -- The University of Houston Lady Cougars defeated the Houston Jaguars 70 to 61 in an exhibition (re: preseason) game inside Hofheinz Pavilion.
Neither team shot the ball well from the field.
UH made just 24 of 73 (32.9%) from the field while the Jaguars made 24 out of 75 (32.0%).
Five Lady Cougars scored in double figures: three sophomores and two freshmen. Sophomore Courtney Taylor scored 17 points (7 for 19) and pulled down 10 rebounds; while center Cobilyn Hill scored 10 points (4 for 10) and hauled in 10 rebounds. Second-year guard Jasmine Johnson added 13 points and five rebounds while freshman point guard Porsche Landry chipped in with 10 points, eight assists, and four rebounds. Roxana Button added 12 points and five boards.
"I made my teammates better," sighed Landry after the game. "That was basically it."
"I give myself a 'B' because I know I can do better," added Landry.
Despite committing five turnovers, Roxana Button wasn't nervous.
"I was anxious. I was ready to go."
Button acknowledged her ball handling needs to improve.
"I did pretty well for the first time. I need to handle the ball a little bit better and grab some more boards."
The Jaguars were led by former UH Lady Cougar Chandi Jones' 20 points. Jones shot 8 for 18 from the field including 4 for 7 on three-point shots.
UH will begin the 2008 - 2009 regular season this weekend with two home games: a 5:30 p.m. tip off this Friday versus Southeastern Louisiana followed by a noon tip off versus Gardner-Webb on Saturday.
