Comets Update

I receive this from a Comets' fan who received the letter from a Comets' Accout Executive.

Greetings,

I wanted to give you an update to how things are looking in the Comets camp. We hope that by this month's end an owner will have been chosen. We are meeting with individuals and groups to see who would lead the Comets in the direction we need to be headed.

In our efforts to keep the Comets in Houston, We have set goals for 2009 season tickets. The league and our COO believes that if we are able to reach/exceed these goals, we will have the numbers to show the potential owner that Houston has a solid fan base. We feel that this will sway the new owners decision to keep the Comets here in Houston and improve here as opposed to moving the team to another city or state and re-building elsewhere.

Our goals were as follows:

As a team we needed to have 85% of our current season ticket holders return by November 15, 2008. I personally have the greatest number of season ticket holders and only 45% of them have turned as of today (November 3, 2008).

Next, as a team we needed 1200 new season ticket holders to commit to the 2009 season, with each season ticket holder representative commit to 200 new season ticket holders. Currently I have the most new season tickets, but I only have 30 of my 200.

I'm sharing this with you, because I need your help to reach/exceed my goal in our efforts to keep the Comets here in Houston. I thank each of you that have renewed and purchased additional seats on your account to help. I also want to thank those of who have purchased tickets and donated them to organizations like TexasTicKids.com and the Sam Houston Council Girl Scouts of America. If you have not committed to your 2009 season seats, now is the time to act.

In 2007, it was up to the owner to keep the team here. In 2009 it?s up to the fans. We can't continue without you!

Putting it on the fans? Please. Get an owner that shows commitment and know how for a classy organization, and the fans will commit.

Those goals are so unrealistic that I can't help but think they're designed to fail. I mean, come on? Asking for more than three-quarters of your base to renew a month after the league's season has concluded? WTF?

You guys are getting screwed like a cheerleader on prom night, and the fact that the league is letting it happen makes me sick to my stomach.

CB is right. Why on earth would any season ticketholder put money into the Comets at this point when all we've been told is that the team is for sale? It's asking for a tremendous act of faith to expect Houston area fans to step up and renew right now. The economy is in the toilet and no one wants to throw their money away.

Will the Comets remain in Houston for another season? If the team isn't here, will the season ticket deposits be refunded? Where will they play? What will ticket prices be? Who will coach and what players? These are the questions I would want answered before even considering putting down my hard-earned money on the team.

The league has screwed things up with the Comets from the beginning of Hilton Koch's ownership of the team ... and that's a damn shame.

This is ridiculous. The economy is in the toilet, 401Ks are down by a third, Houston was hit by the largest Hurricane since Andrew resulting in billions of damage, people are suffering financially to rebuild, and the Comets threaten us to pay now or lose them for ever?
Hmmm, I guess I will say so long Comets. I'm investing thousands of dollars into repairing my home...money that the insurance or FEMA will not cover. Not only no Comets, but no Christmas either.
Sheesh, what is the WNBA thinking?

Last year, Seattle fans were in a much similiar situation. Our team had already been sold to out of town owners who threatened to move them and the Sonics if they didn't get a multimillion areana deal. Storm season ticket holders renewed early and often and a group of local busniess women bought the team. They have publicly said that fan support of the team was a major reason they stepped in and bought the team. Dig into whatever funds you have and help save your team.

So you can do nothing, ensuring that you won't have a team at all, or you can rally to save the team, with the risk that the team may not be run exactly the way you like.

Sounds like a no brainer to me. You have to keep your team.

I agree with you pilight...I'm one of the 30 that have purchased season tickets and that's NOT nearly enough to impress the potential owners and that's a darn shame....Fortunatley for me, the economy situation is not hurting me that much and this is something that I enjoy doing and I'll do it in a heartbeat....I certainly respects everyone else's stance but, this is IT for me

But it is on the fans. Only a few of us have stayed with the Comets through thick and thin. Attendance has gone done even when Les owned us, why do you think he sold?

I agree. When are people going to stop bitching and step up and suppport the team. All this whining is making me sick . . . .

Things amy not be the way we want things to be, but people stop supporting the women long before Hilton came along.

    You know what's funny . . .

If the new owner, IF we ever get one decides to keep the team here, to test the market and the ladies still don't get the season ticket holder support needed, we are right back to where we are today.

I'm no accountant or mathmatician, but I foresee if the fans don't turnout, the Comets will be gone. If not this year, in the next few years.

Think about it. Why keep a product in a city that doesn't want or recognize it. If I was the owner I would move the team to a market that is hungry for professional women sports.

Houston is too finnicky (if that's how it's spelled)

Thank you to all of the faithful to complain, slacking in support fans of the Houston Comets. I thank all og you who come to blog sites to complain, but never do anything to keep the ladies here.

I thank each of you you feel that women don't match up to the play of men. Those who feel that it's not real basketball.

I thank all of you who get mad for not getting a t-shirt thrown your way, having to pay less for parking than any other professional team in Houston. I thank all of youthat complained about the Compaq Center, then complained about the Toyota Center and Reliant Arena.

I thank all of you fairweather fans that fell off when the road got rough, when other teams that don't have ANY championships support them win or lose.

It's our fault. The Fan. If we would have been there as a whole to show Houston supports women, just as much as any other sport; if you took the same energy to encourage instead of distract.

    I thank ALL of you!

The Houston Comets #1 Fan from day one and have retained my 6 floor seats, happily and humbly. So unless you have spent on the Comets as much as I have, don't come crying now!
