Comets Waive Shields

Updated, June 28, 11:55am -- Tina Thompson will be on the Inactive List for tonight's game versus the Indiana Fever.

HOUSTON, TX -- Last night, the Houston Comets announced the waiver of Ashley Shields, the first ever junior college player selected in a WNBA Draft. She was chosen by the Comets in the first round (8th overall) of the 2007 WNBA Draft.

To say Shields WNBA career was disappointing, would be definitely be an understatement.

Over the course of 39 WNBA games in two seasons (2007, 2008), Shields posted an average of 4.8 points and 1.1 rebounds.

Shields, 5'10, guard, attended Southwest Tennessee Community College, finishing her junior college career with an average of 25.9 points, 11.0 rebounds and 7.0 assists.

The Comets (6-8) will try and extend their three-game winning streak when they host the Indiana Fever (7-7) Saturday night at Reliant Arena. Tip is scheduled for 7:30pm.

Note: Comets forward Tina Thompson's (fractured ring finger, left hand) status for tonight's game has not yet been decided.

I can't recall the exact words that Kartleen Thompson used when she talked about using the Comets first round draft pick on Shields but it was something to the effect that if Shields worked out Thompson would be considered a genius and if Shields didn't work out, Thompson would be considered an idiot.

This has been an embarrassing episode in Comets history...right up there with the Russian draft picks not showing up...what about Renee Camino?

Worse than the Russians not showing up. Those were later picks, some did show and one was a contributor as center in the 1999 championship.

Using the #8 pick on an unknown "secret weapon" that didn't work out showed an utter lack of knowing how to evaluate talent. Gambled the Comets future in Houston away most likely.

Not to mention the Comets got nothing with their other good pick last year as well - cutting Dee Davis mid last season.

Had Karleen in 2007, drafted Ivory Latta instead and brought back Janeth Arcain, the Comets could have been in the playoffs last year.

NOW, after these old vets she brought in are missing games, Sancho and Mistie (and I will give credit for Ajavon though I would bet you 10 to 1 Karleen got advice from someone else on who to draft) are playing great and like they would have played great last summer had she let them off the bench.

I doubt Karleen will ever get any credit from me other than Maiga Ba.

Interesting the Comets have won the last two games without Tina and SANCHO LYTTLE is one of the ones stepping up. A player looking great last year but wouldn't be let off the bench. Now they need her.

i feel bad for shields bc it is not her fault she was picked so high. if she would have been picked as a 2nd or 3rd rounder, she would have been given a chance to develop and not have the pressure of performing right away. the decision making of the coach/gm is questionable. she cut crystal kelly who is balling in sacramento, cut the pg that is now in washington. she has focused more on bringing in her friends/former teammates/la players than she has on whats best for the team. she only played sancho bc tina is hurt and look at what she is doing. sancho has also been good off the bench in the past but this year coach wouldn't even play her. i think the team is winning in spite of the coaching and not because of it.
